Do people still get hung up on prestige? Went to a no name school (not even in the top 100), made it into consulting, made it to the third round at McKinsey, and have an interview w/ a VC fund.

You sound like a self starter with balls. Love it. Shouldn't be at the D.

like

Aren't you hung up on how high you can go? And how do you define "high"? Based on what's popular with other people? Seems like you are trying to prove something to everybody, and why would anybody care?

Yes prestige counts

For how clients will view you, for how peers will, and ultimately for the networks that come with them

like

Same here, mck2 - people like OP spew shit like this to overcome their own insecurities. We should not entertain them.

like

Only insecure people are hung up on pedigree. That, and people who want to prrpetuate barriers to entry.

like

Ok so go you?

like

...only men can get away with this

like

Np OP. I felt you were insinuating that those of us that did work hard since Childhood to build a pedigree were a bunch of idiots. I completely agree as I said before that there are many roads to success. Maybe I read too much into your post, my apologies.

like

You're right it might be over reacting. I was hoping to give you a bit of reality check. While it's good you have a decent job, the pretentious tone of your post is unwarranted. The comment was intended to point out both are 2nd tier firms and on an objective scale DD isn't even the top of the 2nd tier. In holding yourself up as an example of how prestige doesn't matter, it'd be better if you achieved something more material. There's a long way to go before claiming equivalence to a top grad from a top school. I was hoping to illustrate, albeit poorly, that hard work early to get into prestigious school shortens the journey to the" top "dramatically. That is another reason prestige matters. It may have helped you fighting against your lack of prestigious background to get ahead, but at a certain point you can drop the chip and just go after it.

like

I'm happy at DD (have done some of those interviews), but my story is pretty similar to yours OP. I always laugh at those that think they'll get ahead because of their school.

like

Same OP

Not to mention out of debt. I just followed the fancy lunches and found my way around.

Minus the other stuff, but we here we here

I'm with BCG, for your information.

like

Actually at @D1 I followed ladies to the fancy lunches and I am a male POC 💅🏽

like

SM1, I took a low shot but I think you're overreacting. Who cares if Accenture is better or Deloitte is better. What I said to you earlier is if you're at Accenture, not exactly sure how much 'prestige' plays a part in getting into the company or succeeding there. It's a large company just like Deloitte and hire just about anyone

like

SM1, your more detailed response resonated with me. Thank you

like

Also- are you male?

D1, for more money obviously...and yes I'm male.

D1 is this racist too?

The answer to your question is yes there are still many

D1 what does being male have to do with anything

A2 how's that turning out for you over at Accenture?

Interview tomorrow for a tax associate opening at RSM. Been working in a mid-size city (different firm) that is about 70 minutes from this new home office in a larger metro. Don’t want to drive 700 miles per week M-F. What will dual model be like going forward? 1-2 times week, 4-5 month? Seems like tax was more flexible than audit pre-Covid

I recently joined Swiss Re at 30lpa, pretty good manager and work culture. Got a hike of 10% in 3 months without me asking for it. But got an offer from another company which I was interviewing for before joining here and they are offering a base of 45lpa. Now I am unsure how I convey this to my manager coz I want to stay here but at the same time I am salivating over this new offer and wish I get similar numbers here. Is it worth raising a discussion? If yes what would be a subtle way to do so?
