I had a client who requested the same thing. I suggested they leave their pet in a shelter because if they no longer want it, I'm sure someone else will.
I would try to talk to them about local adoption services and brainstorm to see if they have friends or family members who could help. That seems like an extreme response to being unable to care for the pet, but I understand that pet owners sometimes feel desperate at their wits' end. The most important thing is to be caring, supportive, and gracious in helping them find a solution.
These are great ideas. I tried to talk them through it. They were surprised I said no, but I told them I'd love to see if we could find a way for the animal to continue living instead of just ending its life. I would like to know how many vets are actually euthanizing healthy animals??
Couldn't that be considered animal cruelty?
Other from minimizing shelter overcrowding, there is no need to euthanize a perfectly healthy pet. Couldn't they have just sent the pet to a local adoption center?
It is tragic when people put down healthy pets, but the alternative is that the pet is neglected until it has a medically justified cause to be put down. Those that are garbage will always find a way to be garbage.
These horrible pet owners just consider their pets as property that they can dispose of at any time. It is just terrible for a dog to die simply because its owners no longer want them. Pets are more than just possessions; they are living, breathing beings.
I'm still baffled as to how this is legal in the United States. Even shelters in Germany are not permitted to kill animals when they are full; instead, they must either collaborate with other shelters to find a space for the animal, ask the owner to return at a later time, or create room when no other choice is available.
This is already happening in many countries. In Ireland, I couldn't just go to a vet and request that my pet be put down. It's like it's illegal to crop ears and tails unless there are medical grounds to do so. The fact that I own a pet does not give me the right to dispose of it as I see fit.
No. We never euthanize animals for any reason other than the health of the patient or in extreme cases of aggression. It is our policy to try and find alternative solutions to those types of situations, such as finding the pet a new home or working with the pet owners to provide resources to help them keep their pet.
We refuse any requests to euthanize a pet due to the owner's inability to care for them. We encourage owners in these situations to reach out to local animal shelters and rescue organizations for help, as there are many resources available for those who are no longer able to care for their pet.
The vet I work for euthanized a dog the other day because he kept jumping the fence and the lady couldn't keep him put up... She runs an animal rescue in our town...
