My opinion is as follows. there will always be more to do at work. You can never finish everything. You might finish a project or an aspect of that project but the to do list is endless. Often times organizations go so lean with resources for projects, team members step up and fill in the gaps, but at what expense? Burnout is very real, an unexpected illness or ETO for you or a cross functional partner could derail an entire project timeline even though you worked your a** off. Sometimes you need to let some things slip to make it clear there is a resource shortage. Notice a how most companies don’t complain if you work 10+ hours over 40 but have no problem scrutinizing less than 40.
A job is a job, your family is your priority and kids and memories wont always be there to enjoy/make. Always keep in mind, you die today, your position will be reposted on Indeed next week. Is it really worth it?
I am really struggling making enough time for the family right now but they understand because of the economy and the fact that I need to perform at my job so that I don't risk it or fall behind! It's just one of those year for me. And I don't have much of an effect over the deadlines at the end of the day - you're lucky if you do and should take advantage of wrapping up within the first few weeks of Dec.
No product launch can be THIS important that you lose time with family during the holidays. Even if you launch a product during the holidays, the GTM will take weeks/months so you can work up to it.
Plus, it’s the holidays. Other employees are taking their PTO, companies become quiet. You can’t effectively get PMM work done without stakeholders online. Where are they? Oh, on a 3 week cruise with family? Yeah, then Revenue can wait.
This is why Apple, Microsoft, other consumer companies launch products in the fall in prep for holiday sales.
I am not celebrating Christmas at all and can be focused on this job completely, just let me know…
If it’s possible try to postpone anything unimportant until after the holidays. I’m assuming you have a great relationship with your family; cherish that over your job and spend time with them. If your employer doesn’t agree then search for another that respects work-life balance
