You don't *have* to hire an accountant, but it's recommended, because filing taxes as an independent contractor when you have to send estimated payments, etc. can get complicated and confusing. Once you're used to it, it's fine. You just make a habit of setting aside a certain percentage of your income so you'll have it to send in quarterly. If you're over or under, that will be taken care of when you actually file.
No, you don’t need an accountant. Tax filing programs guide you through. It’s not the 1099 that is a challenge. For me, it’s the P&L statement. Also, you can pay quarterly via irs online account.
