Ever bombed an interview so badly that you agreed at the end of the call you aren't a good fit?

I had so many interviews in b school I forgot which one I was in, didn’t know the company name or what role I was interviewing for. We agreed in the middle of the interview it wasn’t going to work out so we ended like 10 mins in.

likefunnyuplifting

Did you ever figure out which company it was?

I had learned from my career advisor in college that people like to hear their own name, so you should try to incorporate it into the answers as much as possible.

So throughout the interview, all 45 minutes of it, I said things like “Well, that’s a great question, Evan” and “Well, Evan, I would have to say my favorite class this semester was Macroeconomics” and “Hmm, you make a great point, Evan.”

As we finish up the interview, he shakes my hand and goes, “By the way, my name is actually Kevin.”

I’ll never forget feeling kidnapped for an “entry level marketing” role where I was stuck with two guys trying to sell credit card machines to crappy businesses. 😂

funnylikesmart

Oh man, I got kidnapped to sell office supplies. Of course, the person hiring is always driving an Audi or similar 😅

My first federal interview few years ago. I was completely thrown off at how robotic it was. I said "well I blew it" at the end of the interview in front of the panel 😆

I used to write on my CV that I could speak a second language. Until someone scheduled a 1 hr interview in that language…

After 5 minutes it was clear to all parties that my language skills weren’t up to scratch and we were done within 10 minutes…

You can have a good interview and still agree you aren’t a good fit - it’s a two way evaluation. You can have a bad interview (off day) but still actually be a good candidate. Shake it off and better luck next time.

I did, and then I got the offer. For EY.

Two come to mind -

1) I had an internship interview for an R&D role at a biotech company when I was in college. Talked to the head of R&D and was asked about my favorite college class. I mentioned my kinetics class, how amazing I thought the course material and professor were, etc. Spent several minutes talking about the textbook as well. Then he asked me the name of textbook and the author. I made something up not thinking he would care to check - then the interviewer proceeded to tell me he worked with my professor and was a co-author of my textbook which led to an awkward rest of interview.

2) Interviewed for a full time engineering role. My final interview was with someone who actually worked with my research professor in their post doc. Had some engaging in depth conversation that led to discussions about another professor who was considered a big leader of the subject. I spoke for 10 minutes about said professor, the work they do, etc and how amazing they are for this industry. Only to realize the interviewer seemed very disturbed and uneasy…turns out interviewer was assaulted by this professor many years ago and had a panic attack in the middle of the interview. I did get the job but damn was that awkward to explain…

I’ve been there at an in-person interview. The last five minutes of the interview consisted of the interviewer giving me advice on how to do better with future interviews.

like

Oh my!!

What facts did they share?

Details pls 😂

Oof. That’s hard. Whilst the exec member could have been a hiring manager, you should have been told so you can better prepare. For me an interview like that is towards the end so you fully understand the role, have 3-12months ideas, insights on company, etc.

Wouldn’t stress too much. Good luck with the hunt!

Wow! What do you do now?

Yeah. It was a financial analytics role, or so I thought. Went through the whole interview and at the end, the Director pointed out the role was more managing the data itself and operations focused... we both agreed it was best to go with others.

I did that today 🤪 it was just an HR screening round. Ended in less than 10 mins!

I applied for a job at Visa and was contacted the same day. A few days later I had a 30-minute screening interview with the hiring manager. I knew I was very early in the process since the job had only been posted for a few days. It's been 3 weeks and I haven't heard back, even after reaching out to the recruiter. Have I been ghosted or is there still hope? Does anyone at Visa have insights? Looks like there are a ton of jobs posted so maybe they are just backed up?

Did an interview yesterday that was supposed to be behavioral, but turned out to be more like the case interviews I did in undergrad. Do you have advice on how to interview better with Amazon?

My résumé and portfolio are great, and I’ve been asked to interview with Amazon for 4 different teams now.
