I’m no expert by any means but qualitatively, I look at :
1) CEO’s vision = potential ceiling for the company, is there a product roadmap that goes beyond the current business
2) Track record = how do they work through adversity, did they follow through on their promises to investors
3) Execution = working product that lives up to the hype
4) Growing sales = low profits are okay as long as there’s strong quarter to quarter growth in sales, strong geo expansion or market share growth
5) Competitive standing/edge = are they a market leader, how big is their moat, and who can potential challenge them in the med-long term
6) Market sentiment = read up on others DD, try to identify factors you may have missed, cross-examine with yours, and determine if you are bullish/bearish at the end.
I think the best investing combined fundamentals with technicals.
So when I hear about a good idea I tend to look for a few key items:
1) does the company have a theme behind it or not
2) what’s the industry health look like
3) how well run in the company - think about metrics here like rev growth earnings growth, etc.
4) what’s the company vision and strategy - listen to the most recent analyst day and a couple earnings calls
5) what are the key risks?
6) what’s the long term stock performance over 5-10 years - up or down?
7) what’s the stock performance over the last 12-18 months?
8) had anything changed to break those trends?
9) then I’d get into the more detailed technicals to think about an entry level
I tend to have a smaller list of companies that I follow for these larger, longer term trades. I have a couple news letters I follow to help speed up this process. Cramer’s club gives a good starting point. For smaller trend following stuff I usually do lighter touch job and focus more on technicals, but in need some sort of clue about what I’m getting into even if I’m not deep on the guys of the financial statements.

Btw, if you're new to this - just pick a broad index fund.
If your truly looking for a value oriented investment, Operating profit margin. Check how their debt is and compete to against competitors and their wacc. Insider ownership and purchases, you want management to have a vested interest. Those are a few of the things I keep an eye one.

Older I get, more I look to management.
Solid management team, balance sheet, and prospects? Highly likely a long term investment.
