My friends in ord with 1k united status never got upgraded. Definitely not worth it.
Personally i would save those 900 dollars and use it to upgrade yourself next year
You get 6 global upgrades with 1k. Thatās worth way more than 900
And you get to go to Hawaii.... WAKE UP PEOPLE! HAWAII!
Idk. Iām a status whore so Iād probably go for it
^ yea bunch of homeless people and tourists from the mid west
Check flights to Hong Kong. Honestly. Tickets this time of year are around $600, and go get a suit made with the rest of it
You wonāt get upgraded going to Europe if youāre 1k. Youāll have to use one of your upgrades only if youāve bought a full fare economy flight... that being said you should be able to get 8k flying within the continental us for less than $900... I did an ord to ewr to iah to sfo to ewr to ord last year for $430...
As a 5 year 1k and now Global Svc person, Iām telling you itās not worth it. Not only will you not get upgraded (unless youāre flying to a non-hub city... then maaayyybe) out of ORD, but itās next to impossible to use any of those upgrades anyway. Trust me, I have some expiring in a few days and even at GS status, I tried to use a global upgrade on myself just to get from EWR to IAH and it didnāt work. Save your $900. United sucks.
Also depends on where you go. Flights to NY or LA are usually crammed full of 1K, but others arenāt. You also make miles faster with 1K, so thatās there. Access to lounges also
^ free food and drinks on a flight also
You donāt get lounge access with 1k. You have to pay for United club... and then pay for the beer inside.(yes Iām a beer snob and know it.)
I think it's worth going for 1K. Yes you'll get higher on the priority list for upgrades which is great for the one-off routes.
But the GPUs are worth it if you can use them. For international flights, you need a W class fare or higher, or full fare. You can also apply GPUs on Lufthansa and ANA flights.
But one big benefit is access to the 1K customer service desk. I've rarely had to wait for more than a few minutes before talking to a rep!
Iām ORD 1K and get upgraded on every flight outside of the top 5 biz routes (eg ORD-LGA Monday morning)
Itās so worth it if you plan to fly internationally next year. But not if your destination is exclusively domestic
I am based in Chicago and will be flying out of the ORD... I never had 1K before so I am not sure how useful it is... I hear that there are so many 1Ks and GS flying out of ORD on Mondays that even with 1K you rarely get upgraded.. so maybe it makes sense to save $900 and not bother... the only hope Is that I get an upgrade for myself and SO when we are traveling to Europe which most likely will occur only once next year š¤
Thanks SC!
PwC1 I would love to go but have my GC application processing so canāt travel internationally ššš
+1 to D1. Better off exploring a few random places than Hawaii unless you planned to go there anyways. More efficient ways of hitting the 8k
OP, check flights to LCC-heavy airports (e.g., BWI, FLL) and you'll find cheap tickets that will route through hubs. I found $300 tickets from BWI-LAX through ORD early this year that gave ~5K PQMs r/t. You can probably find something for less than $500.
Not worth it. I'm 1k and rarely see an upgrade when flying hub to hub. Also, global upgrades aren't the easiest to use - full fare and subject to availability.
