MBAs are massively overrated.
If you’re a specialist who hasn’t had exposure to all of the elements of business (eg an engineer, a lawyer, a marketing person, an HR person) who needs training on the basics of strategy, operations and finance there is some value, particularly if you’re changing career path.
But 2 years work experience analysing and advising companies on a wide range of issues that you’d get from proper strategy consulting, M&A or running a small part of a larger business will trump the same time doing an MBA in my view.
There is something to be said for the signalling and networking value of MBAs if undertaken in the country you intend to work in but this is obviously substantially less valuable if you move overseas.
When I interview folks with overseas MBAs my thought process is very much “cool, but what can you do?”
It certainly doesn’t hurt but it’s not a major plus. Definitely not a disqualifier if you don’t have one.
Interesting thread. As someone who has worked in the Aus market for 10+ years I’ve typically found that unlike the US market there is less weighting/significance placed on MBAs in the Aussie one. That said- in some US centric companies based out here, not having one can mean you face a glass ceiling.
Here from top 20 US B-School, if that matters. As above post said, work exp is more valued and you can’t leverage your network as you would in US.
Aussie culture believes in equality in all aspects, including not treating you any special because you have an Harvard MBA.
Having said that, the learning from MBA, not the MBA itself, about how to network and structured problem solving would help you in getting ahead. Also, don’t expect salary premium because you have an MBA.
