Bain & Company For consultants who moved from T2 to MBB…what tips do you have to be successful, especially in the first 6 months? What were some of the major differences you noticed from your T2 in terms of culture, type of projects, etc.? McKinsey & Company Bain & Company Boston Consulting Group

Moved from ZS to McKinsey. It’s just my experience so take it with a grain of salt. The pace of work is much faster - I feel I do more in 1 day than I used to in half a week. The projects also give you access to much senior clients (used to work with brand managers and directors and now work mostly with senior execs on their priorities). The other difference I saw in how we treat clients. At ZS, it was mostly us working and delivering to clients. At McKinsey, we also have client working team members, who are given to-dos and are asked to turn-around their work. The fundamentals remain the same - deliver a great answer, focus on client experience, make sure the team is developing etc. Overall, I love the ability to have a much bigger impact at McKinsey though. Hope this helps!

McK1 - How many years did you work at ZS before moving to McKinsey? Should one try to switch at AC or C?

For one, MBB isn't one firm. The differences between Kearney and McKinsey can be just as little or much as the differences between Bain and BCG. Also these firms are very different across geographies. BCG Middle East looks nothing like BCG NAMR for example.

I’m not even the OP, but what? You basically provided no help and didn’t even understand the question. All they want to know are tips to be successful when moving from T2 to MBB (could be phrased as T1 if that helps you). Also - the going assumption here is everything is NA unless another geography is specified.

I moved here from a boutique (then MBA). Have to be ‘on’ all the time. Work much faster. All my hours in the day are accounted for. Much more client check ins and coaching. Obvs the feedback culture can be tough but also a gift

like

Aren’t the projects more or less the same?

Are you asking OP the question they asked?

own your work more. MBB expects you to come up with answers AND with next steps (though run those next steps by your manager ofc)

Would agree with all of the above. Sheer pace and expectations for quality and thoroughness are all higher. I found broader variety of projects (though I also switched geographies) and more senior client relationships.

I’m trying to pivot to PM after >3 years in finance and I have a 2nd round interview with CPO this week. Company has 3.7 on Glassdoor with complaints about CEO, “bro-y” culture, and hard to wfh. It’s a data analytics company with 5 PMs, was bought by a PE firm this year, and has a new (female) CEO as of Oct. Role is 50/50 hybrid, pays well vs what I make, and most importantly would be a foot in the door to PM. Is this a good place to be for PM? What else do I need to find out to know for sure?
