For those of you that have very large bonuses / equity grants compared to your base pay- how do you allocate reoccurring paychecks compared to your lump sum payments?

I recently joined this club- my base pay stayed consistent at 120k. My TC went from 150k to 250-300k.

One thing I can think of is maxing my 401k during the year than spreading that bonus out to cover the delta.

What else? This is a whole new world for me.

My bonus is 2/3 of my total comp. I live off my base salary (1/3 of total) after maximum 401K deductions. I even save a little of post tax every month. All of the bonus goes to net worth and I live everyday like that money never existed.

like

Be careful about your 401k. Depending on your employer match if you dont contribute the minimum every paycheck you're losing the employer contribution

like

Good point

And to answer your question, my bonus payout has been like 50/50 (and its not super big compared to my salary) so I never count on my bonus.

If it does come to fruition I allocate 10-20% to "fun money". The remainder goes to grow my NW.

-one year I paid off my mortgage
-one year I caught up on my 401k
-one year when I maxed out my 401k and ira during the year I just put it in my normal brokerage and bought VTI

What do you mean by allocate

Taxable vs retirement brokerage accounts.

Perhaps I should also look into indexed universal life insurance as another retirement option. I just turned 30

Yeah, at that total comp level, unless you have beaucoup wealth (tens of millions) aside from that, you have no business with whole/universal life. And that’s not a knock; I don’t either.
