Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

OP: I am so sorry. If it’s any consolation to you, though, getting laid off back in 2013 was one of the best things to happen to me. I got out of a dead-end job seamlessly, was given severance, hit the ground running, and found work immediately. I ended up at KPMG and started grad school. It was a blessing
Same! My old firm was using me in roles that weren't fit for me. Getting laid off really focused my career.
If you need a referral, reach out and I’ll see if I can help
Third-Ed! The whole industry is in a hiring spree
Exactly like that. If there is someone in leadership in the room, you know what’s up.
Start putting the feelers out there right away if you think that. Get a head start.
Can I just add something OP.
Lay-off is not always a reflection on the individual let go, but always a reflection on poor leadership decisions that led to that situation.
Hope that inspires everyone that’s reading this to be a good leader!
Boss scheduled the meeting. Really early on a Monday AM. Weird conference room. HR was there when I walked in but not on meeting invite. I recall the room was strangely dimly lit. Came shortly after a stellar performance review. On one hand totally unexpected; on the other hand I had cleared my stuff out of my desk a month prior because I had a weird gut feeling. Wound up being a really good thing! Layoffs in such a competitive job market reflect poorly on the company, not the person laid off. You’ll bounce back quick!
I was laid off earlier in my career at another consulting firm who had significantly over-hired. Several of the people in my start class stayed on the beach for our first 6 months.
I think it happened on a Thursday morning. There was no advanced meeting request. The office lead’s assistant was just fetching people to come to his office. I had an early dentist appointment, so wasn’t in the office and they started calling to try to find me for my 830 slot. I was confused as to why I had missed calls from the main office line
The meeting was with two partners after I got in around 9:00. They apologized for the situation and one was visibly having a hard time. While I was a little angry, my biggest challenge was not laughing and telling them I already had an offer from BCG for significantly more $, just waiting for my start date! We were given until EOD Friday to clean out our stuff, but could leave immediately if we chose
Pocketed the severance, never looked back!
Stroke of luck! Sometimes it works out that way.
What a stressful situation, sorry OP! Just a bump in the road
Unexpected meeting that seems a tad generic (i.e Career Discussion, Performance Check-in)
Sending you good vibes OP! You’ll be fine no matter what happens!
got laid off from PwC last October from SAP practice. HR pinged me in hangout asking me to join a conf call with her with RP in call. Knew what was happening. But best thing happened. Now I have better WLB. So hang in there. Good luck.
wait till you are on bench for 5 months and no projects are there.
I was laid off from A small software house about 20 years ago. It was the worst time in the middle of a divorce trying to sell a house son and his teens. I knew something was up when the local police department was parked out front. Called into conference room with the whole bunch of other people and was let go along with my boss. was given a week to clean out my office, but I had it all packed an out within a hour.
collect my things from my office. Next day I receive calls asking how I did certain things. Politely explained but on subsequent calls I made clear I wasn’t going to
be their free labor.
You will land on your feet bigger and badder than ever. I’m rooting for ya!
“You will land on your feet bigger and badder than ever”. Love that! It’s the truth! Sending positive vibes to you and OP 🙏 (and everybody actually!).
Dm’d you
Wishing you the best!
It happens to the best of us. There is a light.
Don’t give up. Keep trying and something will work out. It happened to me and I went from a firm where I was under appreciated to a place that values me
33/M. I got laid off 2 years into my career. I thought my life was over. I cried in front of boss and HR it was that bad. I did nothing wrong, they just couldn’t keep me on any longer. Turned out to be the best thing that ever happened. This was at a small oil company. 8 weeks later I had a 50% salary increase and working for UnitedHealth Group. Keep your head up, the job market is fantastic, good things will come of this I promise you
I was laid off last year. I received an invite from a partner I usually don’t work with. I asked my partner and she gave me the heads up.
OP - Layoffs are a bump in the career road. And, they happen to the best of us. And, as you have seen from the previous comments, it often winds up being for the best. Saying that, I’ll chime in with my lay-off tale.
Two firms ago, our group account was laying off people once a month. I knew it was only a matter of time. Unfortunately, they pulled mine forward. I was laid off two weeks to the day before Christmas. This is after stellar reviews and being called out for excellence on a work product from a MD/Partner overseeing a global practice.
I took two weeks off to enjoy the holidays with my immediate family (a first since graduating college) then began interviewing with other firms. Four weeks later, I had an offer from a much better firm that doubled my salary.
Over a year ago, I was headhunted to a new firm with another salary bump plus a title bump None of this would have happened if I had not been laid off.
Fun aside: The lead from the first firm was going to let me keep my laptop, so I could go into the backyard and destroy it with a baseball bat to the sweet sounds of’ “Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangster.” I sent it back.
I got laid off a few years ago. My partner scheduled a meeting with me about a year end review which was normal since it was year end, and when I got there, HR was there, so I knew what was happening. I ended up taking a while to get a new job, but I got a good pay bump, and better work life balance. It ended up being one of the best things to happen for me!
OP what practice are you from?
