I got laid off and not sure if I should find a place cheaper to live by myself and pay rent with UI for couple of months while studying or go back home where family is and contribute much less than I will be spending living alone to parents for rent. I will be saving a lot. Problem is younger sister who is mentally draining and steals my things, makes nasty comments towards me lives there and her bedroom will be right next to mine. She once got me arrested for no reason. What should I do?

Start applying for new jobs. Use UI to pay rent. If you get the job, defer your start date for as long as possible while you study.

like

To be honest, because of that I should just find a place to rent. Maybe even with a roommate to make it cheaper

like

I was going to suggest going home until you mentioned your sister. I personally would value my peace of mind more than saving money and I would choose to live alone, look for some place cheaper, and another job.

like

I love my parents but cannot stand the sister. There’s a different peace of mind with each option. Going back home is the financial peace and living alone is the mental peace

like

Yes by yourself or with a roommate who you get along with.

Not to kick you while you’re down, but being laid off may have been a nice way of firing you for performance issues (some states don’t allow UI benefits for being fired). I bring this up only to make you aware that there may have been performance issues so you can learn and grow from them and not be in the same position a year from now at a new job. I would actively seek out areas of improvement from anybody willing to share.

like

Plan is to take couple months off to study and paying rent and bills with UI and savings

Isn’t it going to be harder to get approved to rent a place if you don’t have a job?

Yes exactly..but the place I was looking at is lenient

I am in a similar situation where I have a toxic sister who lives at home with my parents. I moved out a couple of years ago since I got married. Is it possible for you to stay away from her and install a lock so she won’t steal your stuff? But I guess be prepared to be able to move out if things don’t work out. Do you have friends you can stay with? Just have some backup plans in place since the living arrangements seem unstable.

What did she do to get you arrested?

Can you move in with a friend ?

Has anyone taken part of the education reimbursement program? I’ve been here for 4 years and I’m thinking of obtaining my Master’s in Organizational Leadership, but I feel like with this merger, if I started the program and then there are layoffs or too many new hires, or work just becomes overwhelming, I wouldn’t be able to complete my program. I’m already wearing multiple hats when it comes to work. Does anyone have insight on how it works/what it’s like? Thanks in advance!

Hey fishes, can someone tell me how the 80c bracket works, i know i can get exempt upto 1.5lakh under it, what i wanna know is does PF comes under it or not? For example if my yearly pf deduction is 20k and VPF is 10k so now will i still be able to show investment of 1.5lakh under 80c apart from PF and VPF or i'll be able to get exemption on only 1.2 lakh( 1.5lakh-30k= 1.2lakh)?

Thank you in advance!!

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?

Curious what others think about this: a friend of mine has a couple of months of leave this fall to study for the CPA exam (they’ll be paid a reduced salary during their leave), but they mentioned they have no intention of studying for the exam, and instead plan to use that time to look for another job.
