It made it easier to get the attention of international agencies because a Lion helps with securing a work/talent visa. As a result, I ended up working in New Zealand and have also fielded calls with agencies in London, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Paris, and Berlin.
I still have crippling depression and imposter syndrome, however, so the jury’s still out on how life-changing winning a Lion can be.
Helped get me my second job.
Which helped me win my next lions and meet the CD who'd eventually move me to NYC
Where I won my next lions
Which helped me stop caring so much about winning lions.
I've turned down a few CD jobs.
Not everyone is motivated by job title.
Like, I could be a CD at Leo Burnett. Or an acd at one of the best agencies in the country
In my experience, it’s famous work that changes your career. Sometimes a big win at Cannes can make your work famous, but a silver or bronze lion aren’t going to have agencies knocking at your door. What they are useful for is advancing your career within your current agency - you’ll more likely get on better briefs and teams and it doesn’t hurt for pay rise negotiations either.
I get more attention from recruiters and I get a lot more control over what briefs I work on at my current agency. But it doesn’t last forever, you’re constantly trying to do another great project so you can keep the momentum going.
Won a grand prix 3 years ago. was able to move to a bigger agency in NYC.
also i used to be obsessed with awards and after I moved I started to care less. Especially since you’re back at zero in the new year.
Didn’t at all. But, I haven’t won a GP. Maybe that’s where the big moves happen.
It’s good for 2-3 years if you got it while at a middling-to-mediocre agency to get into a better one, but if you’re already at one of the top shops it doesn’t seem to matter much.
Nope, don't even have a copy of my statues. Ironically for bonuses on years I've not won them and not on years I have even when it's in spades. Lions don't pay the bills unfortunately, they do build books though so it doesn't hurt but don't expect it to give you super powers
🤷♂️
It depends on how you position yourself, and what you’re looking for. Agencies with pedigree will value it with raises and promotions to keep great talent in. Big networks, usually there are so many people on the credit list it becomes harder to reward everyone.
I know a creative team who won a bunch of gold Lions. Got an offer from Droga5 while still being in Cannes. Declined it and got a raise when they came back
