Some are great, some are average, some are terrible. It’s a truly unique, unprecedented phenomena
Most have extremely unrealistic expectations of promotion criteria. Doesn’t seem like there is much interest in paying their dues, and don’t get me started on the sense of entitlement.
So not much different from each prior generation
Ok I’ll bite, here are my broad generalizations and hot takes: Most of the ones I’ve worked with are a little too good at setting boundaries with work/life balance, to the detriment of the broader team who has to pick up their slack. Pretty frustrating. I think because many of them have never spent much time in an office, they don’t see how busy all of their superiors are and how hard they work, so gen z-ers just assume everyone is moseying about their days the same way they are, logging off at 5, starting at 10, etc.
It is that serious though. I watched my parents struggle with student loans, the 2008 financial crisis, unprecedented inflation, and medical bills. Compensation is the only way companies have to demonstrate how much they value an employee.
I watched my dad cry on the phone with his parents because he didn't know how he was going to pay for food and the mortgage after he lost his job in the financial crisis.
This story isn't unique. Millions of families like mine have similar stories.
I don't want to struggle like they did. I don't have kids but if I do I don't want them to have to concoct some story about why they're not eating dinner with us because they couldn't afford to. I don't want them to have to lie about why Santa didn't make much of a trip. I don't want them to watch their parents struggle like mine did. My dad did everything right by classic standards. He did well in school. Studied hard. Got a good degree and a well paying job, only for that to be destroyed by medical bills from my mom and the decisions of a bunch of bankers in new york.
And for that reason, I have no loyalty to any corporation. I'm not part of a team, nor work family. Corporations see us as numbers or equipment. They'll cut us as soon as it benefits them. If you don't pay for gas for your work truck, that truck isn't going anywhere, and for that reason I don't work outside of business hours unless I'm getting paid for it. I love my coworkers and company culture but that doesn't pay my bills.
It is serious.
Just like any other generation before it… A mixed bag…
How old are gen z? There was a 25 y/o thing I briefly had to work with who talked to me like she was my boss, talked about me behind my back, refused to work late, etc. I’ve 12 years in the industry, am hard working and kind. I was startled by this child’s entitlement. I later found out when she left her daddy got her the job, wealthy connected kid. She’s lucky I wasn’t her boss she’d been put IN PLACE.
98/97 is usually the cutoff for gen Z
Im very prideful in being gen-z 🫶🏼
As someone mentioned above in comments, your boundaries are too good (and I'm jealous having basically none), but hold onto that dammit! You'll save your mental health!💗
I agree that they are a mixed bag. There are a lot of brilliant, hardworking folks and also a lot of very, very average, entitled folks. It seems the most entitled are the average ones. But I think that is always the case, regardless of generation.
Some are amazing and hard working, some are completely entitled and have no knowledge. It’s wild, the ones that are great don’t realize it, the ones that are entitled just want promotion after promotion and don’t deserve it.
If internships ended with a pat on the head and an automatic job offer, it's not unreasonable to expect the same in every role
Bussin bruh lit af my tee fire fr
They're not as bad as people make them up to be. Gen Z has grown up in a time of constant change, so they're used to adapting to new situations. They're quick learners and they're always up for a challenge.
All 5 who have reported into me in the last 2 years have been stellar. There are some quirks, but it’s more so around communication styles and uh, teaching them about the realities of the cruel world more than having a hard time getting them to work well.
While some members of this generation go above and beyond, others can be less reliable. I've encountered situations where some individuals falsely claim to have attended meetings, only to realize later that these meetings were recorded...
Hahaha I fired a millennial with this one
I'm curious about the experiences of the Gen z cohort that went to college during the height of covid and transitioned straight into a wfh workforce.
Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate it.
In my humble opinion, the traditional “agency” business structure was already struggling; Gen-Z’s attitude towards corporate culture isn’t going to provide any further favors.
