Does your firm consider Asian Americans to be POC for purposes of partnership promotions, etc.? I have multiple times now been purposefully staffed with other POC (non-Asian) attorneys and have been told to staff juniors who are women. I don’t mind this, of course, but it honestly feels like they don’t consider me an “actual” minority and that it’s not enough. If there is, e.g., a black attorney and a partner on a team, this never comes up.
I’ve been to MDRT 5 times. It’s a great meeting but only if you take advantage of what it offers. I go to learn and network. I don’t bring golf clubs as I’m there to work. Each year I make 10-20 times the cost by learning new ideas or even remembering some of the things that worked but I stopped doing. Enjoy
Have an idea or 2 to share my friend?
Congratulations. Wonderful accomplishments. Mostly business casual and casual. I would bring 1 suit just in case. Can you share a few things with us that you did last year that lead to your great success. (Activities, success stories, your secret to success) MDRT is about sharing the knowledge and wealth. My first MDRT meeting was in Vancouver. Loved it.
Pack business casual. The general meeting is informal. If your company has a dinner, you may need a jacket, but because you’re in Miami, a dress shirt is fine.
As for the meeting, yes, take tons of notes. It’s an experience. I am a 25 year member of MDRT and a top of the table producer.
Also, make friends. I now have people I know from around the world and have people I can visit when I travel. Not to mention, other advisors can be a ton of fun.
