The fact that you were able to land on a job itself proves that you are smart. Smart enough to get an interview then impress the leadership then get an offer and now back in the workforce. Go get em bruh
Do you do anything outside of work? I find that when I place all my value on my career, my self esteem is erratic. I picked up half marathon training. When my career self is failing, at least I’m doing something right when I’m running. I can look forward to it. Same with any hobby. Just like investing, don’t bet all your self worth on one thing. My advice is to diversity your sense of value while starting your new gig. Good luck!
It’s lotta stress and takes a lot of patience as well, it’s was such a rough times and we got through it. The self doubt side is super hard specially around the time I got laid off I was preparing to propose to my GF. The bright side is, after this hard times, I am more convinced by the way how she supported me and believed in me that she is the one for me
You type slow?
Plz fix
Cont; my confidence and self esteem is in all time low, feeling worthless and not good enough for anything. First time getting laid off so I struggled to pull myself up. Any advise how to start the new gig and not being pulled back by the impact of the lay off ? Trying to stay positive but too scared
TIA
P1, D16, manager1
Thank you for encouraging and the support
Realize that with most of the layoffs it was truly nothing you did wrong.
You lasted 6 years, you are obviously good, and you’ll be even better at your new firm!
Best of luck
Force reduction is a fact. The people they pick to stay are prob for political reasons and usually not based on talent or skill.
I struggle with it because that just how I was raised. Definitely needs to be a balance there
Keep this in mind;
Laid off = Previous company didn't value you enough.
New Job = Your are valuable enough to help new employer grow.
Time to knock this out of the park!
Was laid off last year and this keeps me going.
Love the new prospective and the positivity
Thanks
Hey OP ... the new firm hired you cause they need ur skill set. You are important sir/ma’am. I have been out of a job since October .... and in desperate need of a job. Trying to hold my head above the water... in hopes that I will land something soon. OP, pick urself up, dust off the doubts, hold ur head up and do ur best. Remember you are important.... you are worthy, and you got this job cause of YOU.
Best of luck.
Thanks C2, dm me if you’d like and happy to share any leads I have
Also, another word of encouragement. Was recently talking to a PPMD about layoffs and career progressions in this industry. She then told me her story. She had been with a competitor as a PPMD for 14 yrs and had always been a top performer. However, due to a mix of personal health issues, a death of a spouse, and other things she had a few bad years and was ultimately forced out/laid off. She is now not only surviving but thriving here as a PPMD and is happier then ever for the change. I say this to say. No matter what your level or adversity falls you there’s always a next step. Your career is yours and you can always learn from every tumble and reach higher. Keep your grace, skills, and confidence and good will keep coming. Your new firm is lucky to have you!
I got laid off from a small boutique consulting firm. 3 months later, I joined Mckinsey, a dream job for me. Layoffs aren’t always bad ...
Frankly it was a combination of timing and specialisation. I had relevant experience in ge digital domain and the local office was looking for the same. I am not a generalist.
I agree with everyone who’s said layoffs aren’t the end of the world. It happens, and honestly it sucks.
My only point of caution - honest self-assessment doesn’t hurt. It’s dangerous to blindly assume there was nothing you could have done differently.
Yes agree with you, there is always a room for improvement and being better. As for if I could have done something different, yes, I wish I played the politics game better instead of not caring about it
OP, sorry that your post was hijacked by D3. Compete lack of maturity. Simply ignore it. Total trash.
It’s a brand new year. A brand new decade. And you’ve got a brand new start. Think of it as a bit of a refresh. Starting somewhere new is always tough, but you know the game well already- you’re going to another firm. Be confident. Back yourself. Someone else has. 👍
Oh yeah I learned the game the hard way. Thanks for the encouraging positive words 🙏🙏
You got this! I’ve been laid off before - after seven years. It happens. Consider how long most careers are, this is a blip. You’d be surprised how many folks have been through this.
No. It never does. But now you know that you need play the political game a bit so this doesnt happen again. I was laid off from my first job out of grad school. I was going though a very difficult time and had no motivation. I learned from that if I ever feel like that bad again... to get help.
OP you got this! D3 - good luck surviving if your champion leaves or is laid off themselves. D is comprised of a bunch of fiefdoms with a crap ton of politics... performance is not always the main driver of comp or job security
OP - you got this. This might sounds crazy but getting laid off is essentially opening for amazing new things to come your way. Seems like you got something amazing. You were good enough before. You’re even better now. Chin up and crush it. If you ever feel down channel that anger to do even better. You’re going to kill it op - what a way to start 2020. New decade new chapter new you :)
Man! It really warms my heart reading your encouraging and motivating comment. Thank you so much sir/madam
Over time in this industry you develop a 6th sense for your value to a company. Employees either earn money for you or they cost you money. If you cost an employer 20k a month and you are bringing in 1.2 million a month your value is high. If you are on the bench, no prospects, you are a low earner, costing 20k a month. You better be looking at all options. I typically pre-empt the lay-off or take a 2-3 month vacation, but the important piece is I make it my decision. I’m never surprised... Be a little paranoid, keep your options open, assume the company will do what’s best for the company. You do what’s best for you. Never assume a job is long term, consulting, employee, staff aug, it’s all about your value.
Sorry folks! too slow
Some trepidation is normal. You got this job because they know you can do it. The hardest part won't be the work, you can do that, it will be building your network. Use the network building to help you validate your work. Having others do a quick quality and "look and feel" test will ensure you feel good about the deliverable while also building your new network.
That’s a great idea. Thank you so much
The Big4 are each a bloated mess so be happy if your area makes it thru the FY and don’t be shocked if it does not. Private partnerships don’t like bad years so they’re quick to slash and burn to save their own hides. Eventually though there will be a “for whom the bell tolls” moment for each of us.
Bruh, there's nothing new under the Sun. We are all cycling through roles. Why worry about something you can't control. Let it go, free yourself, and this too shall pass.
