Rising Star
Only Hyatt consistently gets good points value for hotels.
If you're trying to get over 1 cpp with Hilton, Marriott, or IHG, it will typically only happen for select high end properties (like in the Maldives), combining it with 4th/5th night free, a transfer bonus (mainly Amex to Hilton which is already 1:2 but with a bonus could be 1:2.5), or buying points on sale.
Yea it can feel underwhelming. I’ve found that hotel points are best used in expensive cities (like NYC or Tokyo) where cash prices are crazy high. That’s when you start seeing real value per point. For anything under $200, I usually just pay cash and save my points for when the numbers really work.
Very brand and location dependent
Why would you add $ in front of the cash cost but nothing in front of the points cost. In other words, like currencies, all points are not the same. Also, very dependent on location and dates but hotel redemptions can be amazingly lucrative as well
Often, it's better to burn 40K points for the $150 room than to hold on to the points and have them devalued the next year and discover it now takes 50K for the $150 room.
I consistent get good value from Hyatt. Not Marriott anymore. A few weeks back I stayed at Hyatt in LA for 15k points per night. Cash price was $350 per night.
Assuming you mean using your credit card points to transfer to hotel programs. As others mentioned really only Hyatt is the only option where there’s value.
If you already have Marriott Hilton etc points, just need to use them at expensive city locations or sometimes resorts
Just from playing with the hotel apps, comparing $ vs points, looks like points prices stay stable when $ prices spike, like for big events. All subject to availability. Have others seen the same?
I worry less now about getting some amazing redemption and more about just being excited that the vacation was basically free.
