I was laid off from Accenture in the depths of the 2008/2009 crisis. I knew it was coming because I didn't have a good performance year and that's how they were deciding to let people go at that time, but still it was a shock to hear it in person and not be able to argue. I had worked for them for 12 years and none of those past years was taken in consideration. I did cry, it takes a lot to make me do that, and shrug it off. I found a job in the industry less than 2 weeks of getting notice. So in the end I pocketed 3 months severance and it turned out better than I expected.
You pick yourself up and find a new job.
The best was when I immediately took a month off and hung out with family at the beach. Total disconnect from all normal schedules and routines is the way to go, you can come back and the slate feels fresh.
The blow to ego and pride are the most difficult to manage. Even if you know it's ultimately for the best or even find a better new gig, for many the sense of it being personal or feeling blindsided is what's so rough. Also when it's not your choice. In reality, our economy and business models plus the arbitrary nature of some of these decisions almost guarantee that we will one day be laid off or fired. Try to work on letting go of the shame and bruised ego but also know that grieving is normal. Our industry is not for the faint of heart. Chin up OP.
I got fired from TGIFridays when I was 16. Got tanked and hooked up with a cocktail waitress during a company party. Still totally worth it
Similar to D2 - laid off in 2008 and was devastated. Got an industry job within a week of being laid off and came back to consulting at a higher level and pay than my colleagues who outlasted the financial crisis.
Fired? Laid-off? Counseled out?
Focus on moving forward, if mistakes were made, learn from them, keep your head up
