I think it takes a lot of maturity and self-awareness to recognize that you might not be cut out to perform at a leadership role. I would approach this the same way you would if you were interest in a promotion. Try to set up a meeting with whoever you report to and bring the topic up, be ready to talk about why you feel that is the best move. You might have to find a job elsewhere, so be ready for that
I would hire you in a hot minute because of that level of self awareness.
I have a relative who realized this and has been fully content to move ‘back’ to an IC role up through retirement. Similarly, I haven’t moved to a people management role because I like the freedom and control over my own work versus navigating interpersonal politics. What leaders truly deal with at higher levels seems like a nightmare to me, but I admire them for a myriad of reasons.
If you’ve realized it’s more satisfying to be an IC, that’s self awareness and wisdom. Who cares about titles. That can be easily described in future interviews. Management is truly not for everyone and that is okay!
Same friend!!! My job in delivery was amazing and I do a great job mentoring and coaching people. But my latest promotion is heavily a sales role at the firm and I’m miserable. Actively looking for other roles in the firm and am willing to do a step back to get out of this. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it
I don’t think it’s going down… especially in tech circles there are high performing IC roles which are critical. Look to see if you have an IC track you can transition to.
I have seen managers stepping down to staff positions for many different reasons; it seems like it was fine. I wish you the best of luck to you!
When I worked on large-scale projects abroad, I alternated between project management and primary technical advisory positions. However, I always had supervisory responsibilities in both types of positions. While I did not 'step down' from a leadership role, I decided in the end that the technical advisory roles were a better fit for me. I was able to lead creatively and effectively, relying on my own initiative and drawing on my technical expertise, no matter what my title was.
Not sure exactly what type of company you are in, but many technically oriented companies actually have a management track as well as a technical track. The technical people are just as essential to the business as the managers.
Just as an example, Teflon was developed not by a manager working to build a market, but by a scientist that purchased some gas cylinders. They worked the first day the were used and not the second, so he said something is going on here and cut open the gas cylinder to find a white powder -- Teflon.
An astute manager will realize that people are most productive where they are involved and not frustrated because 'the job' does not match the interests of the employee. You just need to speak with that person.
Your job is just a way to implement your career. If the job is taking you away from the interesting work, it will need to change to keep your career on track. The cost for fulfillment might be lower pay or a more rigid schedule; the benefit might be the joy of discovery or proving something is the right way to accomplish a goal.
