Bain & Company Hi all, I am interested in making the move to the Middle East, however starting from august/September. What do you think are the prospects for the future in the region? Do you envisage a hiring freeze or are companies still going strong? Thanks!McKinsey & Company Boston Consulting Group Kearney Bain & Company

I know producers who have done this successfully. They don’t work with the same people in their new role so nobody really remembers they were ever in account.
Best piece of advice I can offer. Please, please learn as much as you can about film and learn to love that side of your job. Take an interest in Directors and understand why creatives choose one over another.
You’re not just there to manage costs, you’re now part of production which is an inherently creative process. This will earn you a lot of respect and help you become a great Producer.
Also, don’t think of it as changing positions. It could just be that you’re not in the right role now and you’ll end up exactly where you’re meant to be.
I’m a creative who used to be an account person. Good producers make relationships - with production companies and directors. They are organized and efficient. Skillset should convey. And creatives just want to be treated like humans. You got this.
I’ve worked with several outstanding producers who came over from accounts. If they’re serious about learning the new skill set, their experience in accounts and the fact that they can see that perspective can be an asset rather than a liability.
I’ve seen solid producers come from other departments, and I’ve seen weak producers come from production departments. I’m not gonna judge you for where you’ve been. You’re here now, show me what you got.

There are a lot of similarities (managing clients/vendors, executing/helping to sell in creative concepts). The big thing for both account and production to remember - you are not an email forwarder. Just as account people need to manage a client, not just serve them, producers must interpret creative and problem solve for it, not just shuffle emails and feedback from creative to vendors.
In short, if you’re an effective account person, you have the soft skills to be an effective producer. The rest is building relationships and gaining experience in executional problem solving.
