Has anyone here taken short term disability for mental health reasons? Do you recommend? My worry is the stigma associated with the leave. Thanks

I took short-term disability leave for about a month. The head of my group was supportive of my leave, and no one treated me any differently after I returned. I've since only received glowing feedback. I was fortunate that taking leave didn't negatively impact my career, but at the time, I had similar concerns as you. At the end of the day, I decided that not taking leave would have been more detrimental to my career than taking leave, as I knew I would not be able to perform well with my deteriorating mental health and really needed to take the time to take care of myself.

Account director - thank you for your message. For some reason the app won’t let me reply but I appreciate it!!!

If you don’t take it, your health and performance will deteriorate to the point that you might be let go anyway. Take it.

like

I have, yes. Absolutely worth it.

like

The more people that take it the less stigma! Plus what is it there for ? 😊

like

I have not. I know someone that did and was let go a year after

I think they went on leave immediately after starting

I have also been considering this and would like to hear more about others’ experiences. If I were to do this, my fear would be missing out on opportunities and not getting work when I come back.

I do miss seeing my colleagues sometimes but being able to actually use random breaks in the day that you get in transactional, especially as a junior, productively (work out, cook a meal, fold laundry) has made this job so much easier and sustainable for me. It’s still exhausting and so unpredictable and the December crush is killing me but I don’t know how anyone did this for more than a year or two pre-Covid when people spent all day and evening in the office.

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.
