Yes. Worked out great for me. Got a big salary bump plus a title bump. I was prepared to walk if they didn’t match, and also prepared for them to show me the door if they were pissed I was shopping another offer around.
You’ll have to be prepared that they won’t make you a counter, they’ll just ask you to leave. You’ll need a really good reason for wanting to leave in the first place, or else they’ll be pissed and see you as a disloyal opportunist. If your old place matches, don’t expect them to be loyal to you: if cuts come along, there’s a good chance you’ll be on the top of the list, knowing you’ e looked around before.
If your current employer wants to retain you, they will counter. Just know it might be on the last day when your boxes are already packed.
I actually had two offers at once a few years back. Wasn’t even really looking for a counter-offer. But couldn’t decide between the two. Agency counter-offered. I stayed a few years. Then found an amazing boss. Old agency is falling apart now. Life is wild.
But yes, like others have said, always be prepared to leave. Just in case. But if they like you and you did a good job, expect a counter.
Be prepared to take the other job.
If you go in with an ultimatum, and they say no, there's no going back.
Yes. I did too, I got a little bump and I got them to push for an international transfer.
A few months later, I got a promotion too... then the transfer came through.
It's supply, demand, and talent.
Yes, I have to add I've been on the other side of the table too. One of my folks did that to me, and this was someone I've been trying to coach out of her current role to make her ready for a promotion because her role was being offshored.
She wasn't responsive to my coaching, and when she asked for more to stay I congratulated her on her new opportunity instead.
You must be ready to walk when you do this.
