Has anyone regretted taking a Bain offer over BCG, or vice versa? Entertaining a SM / PL offer between the two, having a difficult time with ranking between the two through the interview process.

BCG is a much better firm. Idk how people fall for the Bain trap.

likefunnysmart

Op - Depends how you read it. "Cool factor for everyone I met in my life" enuf politically correct? Obviously every opinion you hear on this app is based on limited experience. Noone knows everyone. Just being honest about it.

Bain5 - Its how you disagree. I liked BCG2's comment even when he disagreed and wasn't being disrespectful. Peace 🤟

Worked at both and it depends on what you want to do and what you value.

Choose BCG if you want a bigger firm, better infrastructure / support, exposure to digital/technology projects, better pay as a junior partner.

Choose Bain if you want a more entrepreneurial nature, overall more extroverted coworkers / bro-ey culture, less implementation work, faster path to partnership (since you’ll be joining as SM vs PL), and more comp as a senior partner.

like

BA1 - that does not describe my experience here AT ALL. The bro-ey-ness for me is part of being a brotherhood (is there a gender neutral term - family perhaps?) - your perception of Bain is VERY wrong!

Took Bain over BCG and McK and don’t regret whatsoever. Amazing people, interesting work, best WLB. Should also note several engagements had multiple firms or worked with them in the past - were basically all the same. Go with the one you like best.

like

Wlb really?

If you are below manager level, and are unsure about where you might be in 10 yrs, choose BCG. BCG is likely to give you more exposure to diverse experiences, better exits, and alumni support if and when you leave.

If you want to aim for partner and do this long term, choose the firm that gives you better vibes about the people you met.

No offense to Bain folks but outside a small population of consultants and potential recruits (= you in this bowl), very few executives and buyers put McK, BCG and Bain in the same sentence and regard them being in the “same league” They are not so the MBB reference as if they are equal somehow is illusional. McK is in a league of its own. BCG is catching up but still a loooong way to go and Bain has fallen behind on the most critical topics of relevance today - digital and data.

likefunny

If you’re talking purely about the digital and data space then I’d agree and it will for sure take time to catch up or be able to be more competitive. Your original post made it sound like you thought that notion applied generally across all types of work, and it’s that that I disagree with

CONGRATS on getting two offers! I was cross-offered Bain/BCG and as I’ve told others, you’re fortunate in that there’s no bad choice here! It may come down to your specific circumstances (office, industry/capability preferences, etc), which I’m happy to discuss if you’d like, but Bain is an amazing place to work!!!

like

Word. You’ll be fine wherever you. Just for reference, I used my recruiting process to help decide which offer I picked. Use whatever rating system you can come up with, but you’ll be fine with either of them.

From personal experience, Bain is the most homogenous and least diverse in terms of the backgrounds and experience of people they'll consider to even interview as well as practice areas. BCG and McKinsey are both great in this aspect, but throughout all my interactions at every level including up to MDP, people at BCG were more friendly than those at McK. This is just anecdotal evidence of course, but it's a data point.

Go to Bain if you have a traditional background, right out of college or MBA and know exactly where you'll fit in. I have a very non-traditional background and I felt very unwelcome there, despite getting offers from the other 2. You won't go wrong with either choice ultimately, congrats and good luck!

upliftinghelpful

Yeah, it's all anecdotal evidence and doesn't really matter at the end of the day. And the people at Bain were all very nice personally. The organization as a whole felt unwelcoming. I mean, I have an advanced degree, several years of professional (but non-consulting) experience, applying to the consultant/associate level role with a referral from the recruiting director for a different region. Still didn't even get an interview. I had similar issues with some of the boutiques, they just didn't know where I fit in.

Bain does seem like a great place to work as long as you fit the traditional mould, not so much if you're somewhat different. They're working on changing that, now having a pipeline for advanced degree holders other than MBA for example, but it still needs a lot of work. Anyway, sounds like your interactions with Bain were very positive, ultimately that's the most important factor. For me, the choice was made before I started interviewing just because I clicked with the nerds much better...

Chose Bain over BCG, haven’t even started yet but regularly have doubts about whether I made the right choice. However, I’m pretty sure that if I went the other way, I would have had doubts as well. SMH.
Back yourself and your gut feel. As multiple people said to me, there’s no bad outcome here.

like

Would also flag that associate partner / principal is a hard cut at BCG versus a tenure based promotion at Bain. If you’re planning on sticking around for the long term and want more time to get your feet under you, that could be a relevant point.

like

My other view is that - if you are going into BCG/Bain at that level you have a functional and industry speciality - so your decision really should come to - who has growth in my area - which one can I really make partner at - which clients are ones that I can build and make my partner story - unless you are looking for a name on your resume. As someone who has a similar decision soon - those are the areas I am concentrating on. That said I hear it’s hard to be a lateral at BCG but that’s anecdotal
