I started about a few months ago with my wife and daughter (college aged). We’ve all lost weight and are feeling great.
Doing it as a family was really the only way to go, since we prepare and eat our meals tougher. Having one person keeping a separate diet would have been a nightmare and led to lots of arguing.
Frankly, the transition was not difficult. We just threw away/donated all of our carb-laden food, and started shopping online for things we need. Whole Foods and Costco both have plenty of products specifically made for keto diets. Make sure you get plenty of snacks.
I can’t speak to school lunches since we’re all at home all the time, but I would imagine the best thing to do is prepare all your to go lunch meals in advance and just do the calculations to make sure you’re staying under your net carb target.
My younger sister (26) and I are doing keto together, started about 6 weeks ago. I’ve done it before a few times, always fall off.
We’ve found it easy. She’s in law school and stays with me Thur - sun night and drives back to school and stays in her apt Mon - Wed.
We have a little routine now where we make a keto casserole / large dinner on Sunday night and she takes leftovers for a few meals when going back to school. Thursday nights we grab chipotle as our “treat” meal that can be made keto and then the weekends we usually whip up a shared lunch (chicken salad, chicken Buffalo dip).
We’re not hard core clean keto, we use Atkins bars and Atkins/skim fast shakes as well. But agree with EY1 that, for us, we have to commit together because we both have weak willpower so if they carbs were around and one was eating chips, we both would.
I do believe she cheats a bit when she leaves, I’ve been very committed. But she hasn’t seen the weight loss and I have so I think she’s trying to do better.
HIGHLY recommend grabbing a keto cookbook or two. It’s made doing it together fun because we can choose a recipe together, shop together and then cook together. Gets us more active than we were before while also providing more variety that’s chicken and veggies!
