On international flights delta’s non revenue standby passengers (their employees etc.) will be put into an open delta one or comfort plus seat before a medallion member is upgraded. It’s the opposite for domestic flights so you‘d have a higher chance of getting upgraded on the JFK-LAX leg and for LAX-SYD you’d have to be lucky and at the top of the upgrade list.
This drives me nuts. Why would a non revenue ticket get upgraded before someone who spends tens of thousands annually with the airline??? I know this is how it works, just don’t understand the logic
Are you referring to a Global Upgrade Certificate? If so you’ll clear above any other upgrades but you should only use it on the LAX->Syd route. Use a regional cert JFK_>LAX
Upgrade certificate? You mean just being a medallion member and requesting an upgrade or something else?

It’s always a crap shoot. Find off peak flights for the route which will help
Find an off hour route that will allow you to get confirmed ahead of your flight, then do a same day confirm first to first 😎
Have you ever gotten this to work? I always get bumped back to whatever i paid for when i do same day confirmed
Just be aware there won't really be "off peak" flights into Sydney. Sydney airport has curfew overnight and no planes are allowed to enter the airspace without heavy penalties.
I’m a diamond at delta and I called them about this recently. The only way to ensure a clear is to call their diamond support line, and ask which flights to Sydney would guarantee an upgrade if you book now, they will tell you and you can then book separately.
