Have an offer from KPMG for a substantial raise and promotion from current level but is a travel role. With my first baby coming soon, I am feeling very conflicted about traveling (whenever that happens) and missing things. How have parents handled travel with new babies, do you feel like you are missing out?

Advisory is not traveling any time soon....so your kid may well be in high school IF/WHEN travel ever resumes.

I had my daughter 6 months ago and have worked at KPMG, traveling almost every week, for 5 years. I also have an 8 year old son. It’s hard, but my husband works from home and is able and willing to take on that responsibility while I’m away. Haven’t traveled since having my daughter, and things are still shut down due to COVID, but plan on continuing to travel once it resumes. The key is to have that support system at home and to be truly present while you’re not traveling.

Way to go, mama!!

Realistically we may not be traveling for a long long time

like

I started consulting 5 months before my first was born. It's really a decision you and your significant other need to make together. I have no idea what KPMG travel looks like right now though. I haven't been on a plane since January personally.

like

Second this. Some people would never do it and some people make it work. You really need to sit down and decide what kind of life you want for you and your family. Presuming that OP makes a decent salary, I would urge them to think about what they want in life and figure out how work fits into that. Not the other way around.

Are you going to be a mom or a dad?

I’m a father of 3. The mon-thurs travel is tough, but personally doable with my wife at home.

I don’t know of any new mothers that travelled heavily right away. All found local projects with good WLB to stay in consulting.

This is also appears to be the path female partners with families I’ve worked with took.

like

Leaving the house is out of the question????? Are you insane?

like

You’ll miss some stuff, but being home 4 nights a week should give you plenty of time to bond. Just make a lot of effort to spend time together as you won’t be a part of daily routines.

like

Just remember that when you come home, don’t try to upend all of the routines and schedules your wife has created while she’s been taking care of the baby on her own. Make your biggest effort to fit your home time around those routines and schedules, or her life will be hell while you’re away. Don’t just walk in and be the “fun parent.” Be the parent who says “what can I help with or do that you haven’t had time to do this week?”

OP I had this same issue when I took the job at pwc a year ago. I wasn’t pregnant then but knew I would be eventually (I’m 33 and am now). It took a lot of discussion with my husband and mentors to make the decision it’s a hard one. My husband was really supportive and said we’d get extra help when we have kids and I travel. Will I do this forever? Probably not. But it was important to me to get this experience. I do have female leaders in my team with young kids so that helps (granted their husbands have flexible jobs and mine doesn’t). DM me if you want to chat!

Thank you! My wife is a teacher and would be able to take a few years off with this new job. And you go momma is right!

OP: how long did it take them to make an offer?

Wow that’s a long time, thank you

I’m sure they told you that the role is supposed to be 80% travel pero what clients are asking people to come to their office with COVID still floating around and ppl wfh with no expenses?!?

pero like, true

Take the money and title! Join us! We probably won’t travel until end of next year. And I can tell you, from day one, even before it was widely agreed upon, the firm told us it was about what we felt comfortable with. Also, I strongly believe that clients will not want us there every week M-Thurs. By not having us travel as we did before , the client saves money- which they will want to do if we slip into a recession. This time has also proven that good work can be produced, even if the consultants are remote.

I've been following Coforge LinkedIn page, and I have decent offer from them. In one call HR said we will be moving towards 5 days work from Office, to which I said I don't mind. Now that aside, their LinkedIn posts everyone at VP SVP levels are joining.. seems like they are growing very fast, as hiring at such high Positions happens only that time.

Question is - whenever I compare Coforge with any other people say avoid Coforge.. Why????

Hi Fishes,
I have been working with Walmart for the past 14 months and have recently got an offer from Blackrock for 45 LPA.
Considering the recession and US market scenario, help me understand if it will be a good move to join BlackRock OR should I continue with Walmart with the current compensation.

PS. I am not happy with growth prospects in the current project in Walmart.

Role : Data Scientist
YOE : 11
C CTC :35 LPA

Fishes, I have a job title question. Does it matter if a role is in the same project with different titles? Example: SA, State and Local, Researcher vs SA, State and Local, Business Analyst. The job description makes it sound like they are the same project. However, Business Analyst does have more requirements/qualifications listed than Researcher. I’m coming from industry (3 YOE). Any insight is much appreciated! Thanks :)

Interview tomorrow for a tax associate opening at RSM. Been working in a mid-size city (different firm) that is about 70 minutes from this new home office in a larger metro. How flexible is WFH or dual model going forward post Covid? Am interested in this position and going to tax, but not be able to relocate for family reasons. Don’t want to drive 700 miles per week M-F. What will dual model be like going forward? 1-2 times week, 4-5 month? Seems like tax was more flexible than audit pre-Covid

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
