Have any of you dealt with family pushing back against your efforts to pivot your career in a new direction? I know that money is always a concern, but I think my mental health should be a higher priority. Any advice on how to handle this?

Yes, but it's not as if finance is the only field where one can make decent money.

Yes. And I listened to them, spent thousands on a degree I did not want, and now have returned to my original passion. Learn from my experience.

Quite possibly

Unless someone is paying your bills or you’re living at their house rent free than they don’t have a right to tell you how to live if it’s not directly affecting them.

What field do you want to pivot towards? There are a lot of ways to make money besides finance.

1. If you want the approval make sure you give them the whole story, I’m going to do XYZ to pivot to a new career here is how I am financing it and why I want to do it.
2. If they refuse to accept it, chalk it up to people get uncomfortable when others push back against their preconceive notion of “who “another person is. If it makes you happy you might have to just do it and if they can’t accept your growth that’s not your issue.

Just because they had to go through a time when they felt the need to stay in situations (sometimes even marriages) that didn't serve them well anymore, doesn't mean you too have to endure the same pain. Thankfully, we now have the choice of prioritizing ourselves without needing to find "excuses" to do it. This is the new age. We have to let go of that kind of mindset sooner than later. Live your life the way you see fit.

Matthew McConaughey pivoted quite successfully away from the path his parents had him on…

My parents pushed me into school at any cost, despite me not wanting to go. I studied a field I had a passion for, but after working for ~6mths decided I needed to go back to school, study finance, and do something I found intellectually stimulating enough while still making enough money to live. My parents supported either career, so long as I applied myself and took my life seriously, so I was fortunate there. My $0.02 is if you’re unhappy in your current field, and have deep passion for something else that you foresee as being lucrative enough to survive, take the shot. People, including your family, may judge you and be harsh on your decision but at the end of the day you’re the only one who has to live your life every day. Parental acceptance is wonderful, but even more wonderful is living your truth and being able to wake up every day happy and sane. If you’re true to yourself and you succeed, I don’t know how your parents couldn’t warm up to your decision but if they don’t, find solace in your own peace of mind. We don’t exist to be puppets of our parent’s desires, especially professionally.

I currently work at a medium sized firm and have about two years experience in personal injury litigation. The billable hours and lack of work life balance are really getting to me and I am looking to switch to something else out of litigation, preferably in house. I am also looking to relocate to a different state. How do I go about properly marketing myself to companies that might not take my relocation and minimal experience seriously?

Hey All,
I finished a third round interview, and HR contacted me that afternoon saying I had positive feedback across the board and they would contact me the next day regarding next steps. It’s been two days and they finally get back to me saying they haven’t been able to sync with the hiring manager but will keep me posted. Honestly I wish they would talk with the hiring manager and then let me know the decision instead of checking in. It’s messing with my emotions.

Can we talk about Rates?
What is your:
1) hourly rate
2) years of practice
3) size firm
4) state

My answers:
1) $350/hr
2) 5 years
3) solo practitioner
4) New York

I’ve had radio silence from a small investment bank for about a week now. I’ve completed several rounds of interviews, but last Thursday the firm reposted the job I’ve been interviewing for. On Friday the headhunter said that they’re not sourcing new candidates and it’s probably just LinkedIn automatically refreshing the listing. She said they had a busy week last week but will make a final decision this week - is the delay and radio silence a bad sign or is this typical for experienced hiring?
