I’ve been OOTO visiting clients on more than one layoff occasion. Just assumed my job was safe, because I was fully scoped on other key accounts, but friends did text updates as the day went on. It doesn’t feel good watching it happen remotely. Especially when you don’t get a chance to say goodbye.
Yeah, I got a call on the only day I ever worked from home. Now that I have a way better job and get paid good money for the work I do, I wasted months putting up with working for an abusive design director. If you’re going through this today, know that the grass may actually be greener on the other side.
A coworker was once called/laid off on a mountain during a ski trip.
I’ve always wondered this!
I’ve seen both happen
I've seen both and experienced a near miss while we were moving offices. Folks were getting laid off while we all were working from home. I had a "1-1", conference call number attached, with my CCO that dissappeared off my calendar shortly after a colleague with the same kind of meeting on their calendar was let go. We moved into a new office with the herd thinned and trying to figure out who was missing.
Yep. Was out of state on a client visit. They called and left a bunch of messages on my voicemail (no one communicated and they thought I was in the office). Was laid off the day I came back. I found the whole thing darkly humorous for some reason.
They waited till I came back
Why would they? Kinder, classier and easier to just wait a day or even a week.
Not me, but someone else was and he got the 10am meeting the day he got back from vacation.
I’ve had pals receive calls on vacay. Not cool.
I was on vacation during layoffs one time. It really ruined a day of leisure. I ended up just calling the ECD, who told me not worry. There were other people who were let go while ooo. I thought it was poorly handled in the sense that the rumors spread before any official notification was made, but not sure that there is a perfect way of delivering bad news.
