No and I have hired non-targets over targets. Also, once you have experience, school really doesn’t matter much. You’re either good at your job or you aren’t.
Agreed.
In my personal opinion, I’ve worked with people whom have their bachelors and masters degree and it does not mean they’re “smarter” than those who don’t have a college degree. I personally only have my associates degree and often get rejected from jobs because I don’t have a bachelors. However this does not stop me from continuing to peruse other position roles where the hiring manager will be able to see my work experience beats any recent college graduate.
@Leidos, not anymore. There are a ton of FA/PCA/PFD vacancies that employers can’t fill so a lot of companies are foregoing the educational requirements in lieu of actual experience.
Sounds a bit discriminatory to me. If the candidate is qualified, then that’s all that matters. School shouldn’t be a factor in this case.
Let's frame it another way. "Have you ever interviewed a candidate that was qualified but didn't hire them because they were
Gay
A woman
Black
Asian
Deaf
In a wheelchair
Wore the wrong color tie"
Do all those sound like jerk reasons? They do? Then not hiring because they didn't go to a target school is also a jerk move. Hire the best. Not the school. Dumbasses go to good colleges too.
I can vouch for this. I went to a good college and I am a dumbass.
I can't see how school matters if they've made it to the interview stage
Agree with everyone else. If Target school is so important, how did he or she get past the initial screening. If they’re well qualified, not proceeding with them just because of the school is very unfortunate. You could’ve really missed out on excellent talent.
I went to glorified community college back in the day. 25+ years later I’m one of the best in my company. Few years ago I was asked to interview a few candidates. I got this cocky little jerk from an Ivy League school who couldn’t stop telling me how great he was. I asked him if he knew how to change a tire on a car and I got deer in the headlights. It was great.
Agreed SVP1. My original title as an intern was analyst. After a short bit my title became associate rather quickly. My employer wanted to make me VP for our little group, but I refused the promotion and left as the place just became very toxic at start of 2023. I thanked everyone for their hard work and services.
Yes, but not it was because they didn’t go to a target school; it was because a senior hiring manager caught them smoking weed in the parking lot after the interview
They should have taken an edible before the interview!
Why interview them at all and waste their time if you wouldn't hire from their school?
Exactly. Wasting both your time!!!
Not you specifically but you metaphorical—>You are actually stupid if you EVER do this. What school they went to should be the LEAST of your worries.
If they can do the job, hire them. If they have the capabilities, hire them.
Don’t base whether they get the job on something as petty as what school they went to.
Couldn’t agree more.
That’s crazy
I agree with everyone’s comments but I definitely feel there is a stigma towards non -targets especially in NY
Lol, not even a question. There absolutely is.
If this is what these companies are doing they are missing out on a well qualified candidate. The candidate bypassed a toxic workplace.
No, a good candidate is worth more than a school
That would be a douche bag move.
I would go as far as to say some jobs only take people from target schools or have a strong preference towards that .
Again … if the school was such a big deal how did the candidate get through the screening. If you’ve interviewed a great candidate who is not vanilla with the Target school or whatever, you should advocate for the candidate. The candidate knows they didn’t attend a target school but applied anyway. Why? Because they know they have something to offer.
Would you rather take someone with non target school but exact discipline or target school but unrelated discipline?
I couldn’t afford a target school. How does that make me unqualified for a job for which I have relevant experience?
It doesn't, and you don't want to work for a douche that thinks it does.
Absolutely not, and if that were common place at my employer I would be out the door ASAP. The flip side is also being from a target school will get you interviews even when the hiring decision has already been made.
It's very crazy out there man. Have been applying for remote job in the business development manager role and customer service representatives. I have 6 years experience working with Forex brokerage companies in the financial sector. Got alot of interview schedules, only for me to get rejection notification because because I'm base in Africa. Why then are they called remote jobs?. This is sickening man!.
