Is it easy for engineers to become TPMs?

I work in a strategy role at a gaming company. While I have the designation of a manager, I am not managing anyone. They were going to hire people who I would manage but due to recession it’s not happening. I was earlier in consulting and left at the senior level. How does one pivot into senior roles without having an opportunity to manage anyone?

I have an offer to join a startup as an APM. The only downside is that the engineering team is located offshore in India. I’m concerned about the resulting impact because of 1) the potential late night calls 2) the learning opportunities missed by not working with a US engineering team (communication tactics, translatable skills) 3) potential exit opps into FAANG pm roles due to not having experience with an onshore eng team. Like your team lead would give you some work on Friday and the deadline would be on Monday. So you'll have to work overtime or over the weekend to finish it on time.
