Sorry to hear about your son. We went through this with our son for about 12 years - the first signs were when he was 4 months old and it wasn’t until he was 15 years that he felt he was normal.
When he is a little older, you can teach him breathing excercises ( like Pranayama) that he can use to cope up with his condition. We were told swimming would help, but the chlorine made his condition worse.
At the age your son is , we struggled a lot as well - he was admitted twice into hospitals for multiple days since his blood oxygen levels were low, steroidal meds were interfering with his appetite and he was low on weight for upto 10 years age.
A few things really helped to cope up -
1. keeping the house dust free. We invested in hepa purifiers for all the rooms in the house
2. Having a nebulizer at home to deal with those midnight attacks
3. Protecting him from bad air quality - we lived in India for a while , so had to ensure he wasn’t staying outside in the evening during peak traffic hours. We moved to a small town with minimal pollution to help him deal with it.
4. Encourage him to be physically active as much as possible in limited bursts. Over a period of time, it will help him get better
Never had experience with it, but be sure to look at other reasons for the symptoms he is having. Make sure there is no mold, heavy dust or any number of allergens in his environment. They can not only trigger asthma, but reactions to them, especially the mold, can mimic the symptoms of asthma.
Yeah, we live in a ranch and his room is above a crawl space. Don’t think there’s mold, but I guess I can’t say for sure. Might hire air quality specialist.
You may want to see a pulmonologist and also consider potential allergens. I bought a HEPA air purifier for my house and my son ended up on a daily inhaler around the same age, although fortunately he doesn't need it year round. We also have a nebulizer and albuterol on hand to help treat him at home and avoid ER visits.
Doctors may not want to diagnose them this young but can give you treatment plans and medications.
Being sick and coughing may not be asthma though, it could just be that they are prone to respiratory viruses. My older son had croup/RSV multiple times when he was younger.
