Hey everyone, I’ve recently been interviewed for more enterprise level presales roles. I have extensive background in saas having started in support, moved into implementations (post sales) and then pre-sales. I’m constantly getting feedback about my experience not being right for these enterprise roles. My question is what tips/advice can anyone offer on how to position myself better?

What SSA1 said is spot on.

That said, any good Sales Engineer worth their paycheck knows how to deal with unreasonable customer mindsets and objections. And more importantly, how to do discovery and find out what the customer is actually looking to solve.

The interviewer is your “customer”. You are your “solution”.

If they say your experience is “not right” and your reply is to defend your experience and give your opinion why their opinion is wrong … then you’ve kind of already failed the test (whether it’s intended as a test or not).

You should be asking WHY they would say that and what experience they think you lack. Then address those specific pain points with your experiences and challenges you’ve overcome and successes you’ve had.

Just like you would if it was a customer saying they think your solution isn’t as good as the competitor’s.

Start networking. Build relationships that will facilitate being introduced to organizations rather than beingin a position to apply.

Begin by building your brand. Post on LinkedIn and other social media platforms. Comment on industry events, speak to implementation challenges you experience and how you overcame them - be more than your resume.

If you put yourself out there, opportunities will come.

I can’t control the deal sizes I work on now or who my current company’s ICP is but the most frustrating part is my domain expertise seems to be completely ignored. Has anyone else navigated anything similar before ?

Sometimes it is just impossible to make somebody happy with what you have to offer, if it doesn’t fit into a very specific box, they don’t care. Now with that all being said, there are some things you can try to do for the places that aren’t like that. Find the connections between the experience you do have and how it relates to the roles you want to move into. Give specific examples/numbers/etc. that show this.

A new analyst has joined our team and we often give them models/ slides but don’t always ask them if they know all of the accounting principles to be able to make minute adjustments to EBITDA or free cash flow. We are a FIG platform, so the knowledge required is relatively unique as well and not as easy to google as corporate transactions. Is there a better way to coach the analyst short of just throwing them in the deep end to figure it out or should we wait for them to ask us for help?

Last week I had an interview with Infosys, it didn't go well as per my expectations but i was able to answer most of the questions asked by the panel and they said I will get the feedback from HR team but it's been more than one week and I didn't get any update on this. Yesterday I also wrote an email to the HR who scheduled the interview but still no update.

Should I consider that I am not being selected?

Anyone feel frustrated at times with the super aggressive sales personalities we deal with? My AE is always pushing on every ask no matter how minuscule it is. However what I personally feel is they just nag us until we do the job according to their spec. Just venting……anyone else feel the same?

Recruiter for big tech company reached out on LinkedIn about a role. I asked about ballpark compensation numbers and they said they’re only comfortable sharing on a live call. Replied that I often receive LinkedIn offers for roles of paycuts around 30-50% so I want to make sure we’re in the same rough range. Recruiter again said she would only share via live call. Is this a red flag?

Hi there. Ex Deloitte Sr Mgr here, currently in tech pre sales (SaaS / MarTech). Recently spoke to both Salesforce and Adobe recruiters for roles that I thought were lateral moves (Sr SA / Sr SC), therefore I did not proceed with the selection process. The recruiters from both companies told me they typically hire at that level, and people are considered for promotion to Principal in 1 to 2 years. I found that odd. Is that right? What’s the typical TC for SAs and SCs there? (15+ yrs exp).

I feel like I was straight up lied to during the interview process. “lots of opportunities to hit quota”. I’m sitting here with only one demo two months after joining the company. it looks like our team has only two people doing demos, and demos are only happening once every two weeks. At this rate, I don’t think I’ll be even close to hitting OTE. Are there any other companies hiring right now? I’ll have a discussion about my concerns with my manager soon, but there’s too many red flags here.

I recently had an interview with a very promising pre-IPO company in the AI/ML space for a SE leadership position. The interview feedback was better than I expected, but with a twist. They have already given the offer to someone else, but they still want to bring me on board and they asked me what I would like to do. I am in the process of gathering more info, but it is tempting to ask about pivoting into product management. What would you do in this situation?
