Hey guys! I need some help and direction. I’m currently a lead business analysts and I’m wanting to transition into product. I helped start a startup some years ago and ended up being the head of product and absolutely loved it. Other than working at the startup, I have worked at Zions Bancoperation, American Express and now Discover financial as business analyst and have been promoted a few times. I worked in product analytics, and strategy. How do I transition into a Sr. product Manager role?

Your chances of getting into a Sr. Product manager role are slim unless that startup was really successful. You could probably find a product manager role, but not in tech right now where you would be competing with a ton of more qualified people. Look at non-tech companies with tech product lines.

I see, yes that makes sense! One more question, since I do have a resume with big corp on it like AMEX and Discover, would it look bad if I went to a smaller company ? I’m trying to apply to a top 15 MBA school. Or do you think I will stand a chance with a bigger retailer like Walmart ?

Easiest will be prod at discover

Discover is getting bought over by Cap 1 and they’re not really allowing internal movements right now.. looking outside. Any tips on looking for jobs in product or how I can transition into a product role?

At what point does the value of a degree fall off? I'm in my early 30s, and have five years of experience, and work on a very theoretically interesting project. I believe I'm on track to promotion in the next year. So, I could put in a year of full time school to check the box off, but I'd be sacrificing hobbies and social life (not to mention cost). Is this FOMO or is there real opportunity here?

There are many factors at play, but in general do you try to establish relationships with the individuals you know will be key contributors and/or decision makers going forward? Or do you lay low and let what ever happens be/hope for the best?

Just out of curiosity, have you ever started a new job and thought what the hell am I getting myself into?!?
If it was the wrong fit how long did you grin and bear it? 6 months / 1 year / longer?
Did it get better with time or worse? (For instance just a case of lack of know-how)
If you left did you find securing a new job difficult due to only being there for so little time?
