Trust me- you are valued. Don’t let those intrusive thoughts get to you. You are the bright spot in many kids’ week even if they don’t tell you all the time. Some of the kids live for PE.
Think of virtual learning and all the people who were so sedentary, the harm it did to our emotional and physical health. PE is needed. PE and music are the only reason some kids show up to school. Some kids would have no other place to fit in. Don’t question your value.
PE teachers are great for teaching teamwork and planning. Those are skills that span across every aspect of life.
So I teach math. Not everyone who comes into my class is going to thrive with the symbolic language of equations. But there’s so much more to math than that. If I can get students to understand the basics of solving a real world problem (what do I need, what do I have, what do I not need, etc) or the basics of recognizing when a particular method can be applied to different situations, then they’ve walked away with something useful even if they can’t work with actual numbers. I would think PE is very similar. Most students aren’t going to be the next MVP of the All Star Game, but if they leave with a basic understanding of how to strengthen different muscles, how to enjoy some simple exercises, how to work with a team, how to communicate clearly, then they leave with something useful even if they still can’t make a basket.
My son's favorite class is PE. It's his opportunity to get some energy out and do some physical activities. Even though not all the kids are athletic or committed to making changes in their lives, you are educating them and planting the seeds for their future health and fitness. Keep up the good work and be proud of your position.
My students come back from PE so peaceful and behaved. I love having a class after PE, I wish they had it more often...
There is a tanglible difference in the class after PE. More tangible than after break.
I dont give a hoot what you do with them, all I know is they learn something in my class when you're done with them!
It has been the same with all 3 schools I have worked for.
Through simple activities like skipping, galloping, throwing a ball, etc., kids are learning about balance, coordination, and being more aware of their bodies in space. These are skills that affect every person every day, whether you play sports or not.

PE is so very important for kids. Gross
Motor skill development, team building, sharing, good sportsmanship, conflict resolution, competition etc are so important and something that you navigate as a PE teacher every day. PE as a class (my favorite in elementary lol) is one of the only places where kids get to interact with other kids in organized play- it’s so very important. It’s also great for executive functioning skill building.
I hope you take this break to free yourself from any negative thoughts about work. Easy to say- not always easy to do.
The kids that aren't athletic need you the most! You are the person who can get them on the road to improving their health and fitness for their entire life.
Hopefully the PE teachers can teach tolerance, patience, and kindness FOR those kids.
Model it for the other kids.
Hey, so Ralph doesn't run the track. Today, Ralph walked the track because friends kept him company. Good for him - that was activity, that was growth. Good for them - they provided positive reinforcement.
Also, acknowledge that some of them won't leave and want to DO a sport/activity but it can still be helpful to have a basic knowledge when out in the world meeting and talking to people.
You. Are. Needed.
It doesn’t matter how good a kid is in athletics; what matters is that they learn how to move and that movement is good. Too many kids and adults today are stuck in a chair staring at a screen growing more sedentary by the day. I keep thinking of the people in “WALL-E” and how that is the path we are on… Kids and adults are far more flabby today than before screens.
Remember to do the “non-traditional” sports that are good for a lifetime: golf, Frisbee, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, blading, bowling, sledding, geocaching, etc. The objective isn’t to turn them into athletes; it’s to find movement they enjoy and can enjoy as long as they can move.
(As a fun aside, my kids were walking around a park not too far from their elementary/middle school and they found a geocache their phy ed teacher had put out like five years earlier. It even had small toys in it! It prompted them to contact her and tell her how fun it was to find it and remind them of her and how much fun they had in gym class.)
You have some more freedoms that classroom teachers have-you can literally have them run around! Rainy days are a killer for my group because their bodies Need to move and your class can provide that with ease. I loved capture the flag, fishy fishy cross my ocean, and another game I can’t remember the name of (one person is chasing another and everyone else is standing touching shoulders in groups of two/three, if the chasee attaches to the end of a group the person in front of the group now has to run). You made and still make memories!!
Kids are literally struggling in many areas of life (mental health, anxiety and focus) because they are not exercising. I have a lot of health issues myself and my doctor has prescribed exercise. PE teachers are invaluable.
I also think it’s brilliant that PE teachers don’t have to deal with the standardized testing that I have to deal with but get paid my exact salary. The PE teacher at my school is the richest staff member because he does PE and after work Real Estate.
Nevertheless, all because the job is valuable, doesn’t mean it’s for you. If you are unfulfilled with this job, while valuable, it might be a sign you need to pursue what you find purpose and joy in. Every job is not for every person.
Thus…PE jobs are incredibly important but so is alignment. Align yourself with your heart, you’ll find joy and meaning there.
You teach teamwork and discipline.
The exercise stimulates their brains and keeps the body functioning. None of your students are probably going pro in anything, some might get to play in college and get some of their education paid. PE is a very important class; don’t diminish your value. You also allow the students to get some frustrations out so they can focus on the rest of the day!
I think PE is more important than ever since kids spend every waking moment on their cell phones or computers. So many of them get absolutely no exercise other than gym class. Our PE teachers try to introduce a broad variety of activities for kids whether or not they are athletes.Just walking laps around the track or gym is more exercise than many students get. We have a great fitness room at our middle and high schools.
I will say that we spend tons of time talking in PD about what differentiated instruction looks like in the core classes but not really with things like PE, although there are obviously all sorts of reasons kids need differentiated instruction in other areas.
