Profit shares this November were a 1.5, which for me represented a ~2.5% bonus. This was a slow step up from 1.0 and back-to-back 0s preceding this profit shares.
As you commented on, profit shares are not guaranteed and depend on global performance, not just your office. And it was sold to me 5 years ago that it was basically a guaranteed 10% bonus on salary over the course of a year, with just a bit of variation. That has not bore out over the last 18-24 months.
As it is, I (and my office) is busy, and the lackluster profit shares don’t line up with the effort and output. On the flip side, if your office wasn’t doing well, it’s a safety net. Pick what you are ok with here - if you need to profit share to be ok with the salary, it probably isn’t enough to begin with.
The other benefits make up for it - at least here in Americas, 10% match to 401k is a significant boost and rounds out the “total compensation”.
I used to work at Arup. The profit share payments are not guaranteed. In my first four years, I received profit share twice a year and it was good. But in my last year there, profit share was very poor or 0. I heard it was very poor in June this year - about 1%. I'm not sure if there was a profit share payment this November though.
