Who told you therapists make good money?!
It really all depends on your goals as a psychotherapist, and where your passion lies. A hard working therapist with their own practice likely averages a buck-twenty-five, whereas a LM&FT employed in community behavioral health I would estimate to be between 55k and 65k starting out. It will also take no less than two years beyond graduation to become independently licensed. If you are looking for a lucrative career, psychotherapy may not be for you. If you have passion, empathy, and an abundance of compassion (empathy combined with action), we need you.
Once established in the field and experienced, other positions in the field, with responsibilities beyond group and individual therapy, such as moving up to a position of clinical director, will pay more.
Hope this helps.
You can make decent money but not typically until 3 years after graduation (when you FINALLY become licensed). The job pays in fulfillment, not so much $$$. Average salary til licensed is probably 40-60k annually…then after licensure if you go private practice - double it.
