Hi everyone. I’m looking for feedback on how I’m doing financially. My friends and I don’t talk about how money. So don’t know what’s normal and what’s good. I’m in tech sales and Canadian 27 year old.
0 credit card debt/student loans. 170k invested in my retirement savings plan, 27k in personal investment account, 700k mortgage on a 1.4M house, 15k in cash, car is worth 4k, 120k in stock in the company I work for (ESSPs) - might sell all of this and invest in different index funds.

@OP you sound like an asshole. Unless you’re exceptionally lucky - I’m talking top 0.00001% of earners - there’s no way you’ve made that much money by 27. I would bet most of that was gifted to you, and you’re here asking if you’re doing well or not? If you haven’t noticed, most people I. Canada can’t even afford to buy a home let alone put 170k in an RRSP.

Seriously, get some perspective.

But that’s Canadian dollars. Those are like Monopoly dollars.

Omg, looks like you’re not doing all that well financially.

"Normal" is relative. Personal finance is just that...personal; so it comes down to what your goals are/when you want to retire, etc. If you're maxing out your retirements & have 6 months of living expenses and other savings in a High yield savings, consider paying your mortgage 2x a month to get it paid down faster. There are tables online that can also give an idea of where your retirement should ideally be based on your age.

I am doing a back door Roth IRA through Vanguard and while everything makes sense to me, I am unsure if an additional $6000 be invested for a non working spouse. We satisfy the criteria but two questions - 1) Is this still valid I.e., $12k can be invested for 2021? And 2) Any insight into how this is done - Vanguard doesn’t let me add more than $6k as it’s above the individual limit. I tried searching the bowl for specific answers but wasn’t successful. Inputs appreciated.

Seeking feedback on GAP insurance. I had a family member who purchased a car in June or July. They were in an accident last week and it sounds like the car will be declared a total loss. Never dealt with this before, so wanted to ask if anyone has ever had an instance where the insurance didn't cover the outstanding balance of the loan and the insured then owed money? Car was $35k, $7k down, finance $28k. Gap insurance is through lender, not auto insurer.

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage.

I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest.

Anything wrong with this thinking or anything else I should consider?
