Depends where in LA is your office. You can take the train and you’ll be able to work but that is only given that you’ll live in a place close to the train. Otherwise, 2.5 hours can turn into 3.5 with LA traffic.
Chief
I do the drive often to visit family in San Diego. You’re looking at 2+hr on a weekend. Rush hour weekday traffic can make it well over 3.
Plan to spend the night, and/or take the train and Uber from downtown.
It’s not really feasible anymore to live in SD and work in LA unless you are near the train station on both ends.
Got it - thanks :)
Used to go back and forth quite a bit and many times it took over 4 hours.
2 hours is best case and rare.
Why not just live in LA?
What’s is ok/allowed now won’t necessarily be so in the long term.
Many offices will start to require in-person presence, albeit probably in phases.
Also - are you in litigation? Even if, in a few months or a year from now, your office doesn’t “make” you come in more regularly, courts will expect more physical presence. And even if a judge doesn’t demand it, why would your firm have you handle it over the phone/zoom when someone else could go in to court in-person?
They cant justify billing a client for your 5 hour (round trip) commute for an appearance. You can’t justify losing that time in hours billed in a day. Eventually.... You’ll be required to show up (commute) regularly, or you’ll loose opportunities to other associates who can walk into court/a meeting on the fly.
It will not be 2.5hr unless you drive at 3AM. Even at 5AM you can already hit some traffic. How about looking into south Orange County? The train Amtrak will be only 1hr or so. The drive can be 1.5hr. But much better than 3-4hrs from San Diego. At South OC you can be close to both friends/family and the office.
