Some guys just want to say something different to stand out and get PR. He is one of them
I mean there's truth to it. The very wealthy people I've met don't care at all. They'll use a credit card, but they won't obsess over optimizing spend or chasing SUBs like this bowl. And to be fair, they don't need to. You think they're gonna chase down an award flight 355 days out? Nah.
This bowl is an echo chamber for something that I personally enjoy, but in the real world, it's not a focus for many people. I honestly think the vast majority of people, assuming they'll be responsible and pay cards off, are best off 1-2 credit cards for their everyday spend and maybe 1 co-branded one.
Sure - he has a point, and the simplicity is nice, but this is a hobby. Have I made silly mistakes in my points journey that ended up costing me - you bet. Have I taken several business class trips that I would never be able to afford normally? Also yes.
I absolutely am in this for the value add - I can give my kids/husband experiences that would be a challenge for us otherwise (or at least in economy), but my main reason is - it’s fun. The planning, scheming, and slight FU to credit card companies all brings me joy.
Lol, shocking a millionaire isn't spending his time trying to play the system to afford things he could just buy outright.
This is like a millionaire saying they don't spend the time to cook at home/mealplan to save money. No sh!1, you don't have to 😂
It all comes down to whether or not you make more doing this per hour vs your main job post tax.
Just so everyone’s aware, the CPFB is now reviewing rewards because too many cards debate and switches or don’t let customers use their rewards easily, especially for travel. Too many complaints on rewards coming from customers.
Yeah he has membership in Long Angle so the $/hour doesn’t make sense for people in that category
Wow, a guy who made his money giving cliche advice to people on “how to get rich”. I’ll definitely take his advice.
In a world of subscriptions, autopay, and the ability to save credit cards to various websites, this doesn’t have to be hard.
I use my Amazon card to pay for Amazon purchase. 5% back.
I use my grocery store card only on groceries to get 5% back.
Bilt for rent and a few subscriptions.
CSR for everything travel.
Freedom unlimited for random stuff.
It’s not complicated. It doesn’t substantial brainpower. And the rewards are for things I’d spent money on anyway. Why would I leave that on the table?
AmEx Blue Preferred does 6% for groceries and 3% for Gas stations

It depends on how you look at it. I can see his point about microptimizing an extra 1.5% between a freedom unlimited and a 1% on a reserve card. However, if you just look at it like spend $5000 to earn this 100,000 points, then it’s not that hard at all. I know 100,000 points for Hyatt gets me 4 nights at a nice hotel.
This mainly applies to getting new subs where the gains are much more worth it. Math is easy: in 3 months do you spend more than $4-6k on your credit cards? If so, sign up for a new card and get free money basically.
My wife and I racked up 500k in points this year just signing up for business cards. We paid for 2 vacations 🤷
I have met people who are deep into the points game, but they are also deep in debt. People who justify frivolous spending using points as an excuse. If I had to guess, I'd say at least 30% of users in this Bowl are like that.
I just joined the points church a few months ago, and I just came from an impromptu trip that was paid 50% with points that otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford given the short notice. I used my SUB plus another 20k points that I earned thanks to other emergency travel we had earlier this year. However, I realized that without SUB and given my monthly spending, there's no way I can acrue enough points to make it worth it. I'm gonna keep my rewards card as I still have another 30k points, and next time I have a big trip coming, I'll have my wife open the same credit card to get the SUB.
I'm a salary employee, I won't make more money by repurposing the 5min a month I put into points, even if I was a points nerd and had 25 active credit cards, I don't think I would be able to monetize that time. I'm also doing pretty good in terms of saving, investing and growing my career, so it's not that points are holding me back.
I think this bowl was more relevant to Fishbowl members before Covid when many of us were required to travel for work. The advice here was aimed at maximizing the points gained from your employer’s spending and not your own.

The bowl does say “All Things Points”…
