Hot take: permanent WFH is NOT here to stay and we will all be back in the office by Feb 2021 14 days after you're vaccinated (just like in Contagion).
It's simply impossible to train new staff to the same standard. Juniors do not learn from seeing other people doing things.

Not a hot take, this is in line with most people’s views. Lots of flexible models with reduced, but not eliminated travel.

I already know several people who have the option to be WFH permanently. Companies are more than happy to pay less for less office soace

Agree, but at the same time I think we’ll see hybrid wfh/lower travel models going forward. No sense making people commute 5 days / week if we can effectively work remotely. Things that have to be done in person will be done in person, things that can be done remotely will be done remotely, and we’ll all spend fewer nights in hotels and less time sitting in traffic or on a train or whatever.

likesmart

This is what I'm looking forward to the most. I don't mind going into the office a few days a week. But they used to make us go every day, even if it was a Friday and I had no meetings and planned on spending the day reviewing stuff. Making a 3 hour roundtrip just to reviews a couple controls is pointless.

My office was really outdated. I'm glad that this WFH is showing that the audit doesn't fall apart because we're not next to each other all day. There's a lot of benefits from working in the office, but let's not act like we need to be there every day for every task.

likesmart

I think somewhere in the middle of what we used to do and full WFH is most likely, especially as many employers are looking to downsize office space but that doesn’t happen overnight due to longer term office leases.

February feels very early - even if a vaccine is approved, mass produced, distributed and widely administered, that seems unlikely to all happen in 6-7 months. Plus there will be an uproar as the same anti-maskers will be anti-vaxxers until their employers require taking the vaccine in order to be allowed to come into work.

like

If you honestly think when the covid vaccine is created that you will be near the top of recipients (ie early stages) I don’t think you understand how difficult it is going to be to mass produce a vaccine where the demand is worldwide. Depending on the country that cracks the code for the vaccine and their willingness to share after enough of the vaccine has been produced people on our strata of the world population could be looking at receiving it months out from the first vaccines given. If there is a vaccine and I’m able to get it, I’m sure more important people have already received it and I’ll be willing to take the risk.

Lol you think everyone in US will be vaccinated by Feb 2021, that’s like me thinking everyone in Florida will wear a mask

likefunnysmart

Yeah February seems a bit soon, I think next summer at the earliest. We need a vaccine that’s widely available before we can start getting back to normal. If that happens by February—great! But we’ll see.

likefunny

When people say ‘we’ll have a vaccine this year’ at best that means that it doesn’t kill you and works in a meaningful portion people.

That does not mean it works for 80+% of the people. Or that it lasts for multiple years. Or that it will be widely available. Or that everyone will be willing to take it after it being developed and tested in a matter of months and approved under the Trump White House.

A vaccine is a late 2021 event at the earliest. And even then the focus will be on people in health care, first responders, food and ag, some critical manufacturing, etc.

Get you WFH ergonomics sorted out...

like

The *press releases* for some of those vaccines are indicating both antibody and T-cell responses, which is good, but the virus is so new that we don’t even know how long immunity lasts if you’ve caught and recovered from it, let alone how long immunity from a vaccine will last. We could well need boosters or it could mutate enough to need annual vaccination like for influenza.

We’ll probably be learning new things about COVID for years, which will complicate vaccinations.

As much as I agree on the wfh won’t last, February is too early. And, maybe you aren’t in big 4, or haven’t been here long enough....but the higher ups don’t give a damn about difficulties, they just expect results, and any excuse will be met with “use more technology”

likesmart

Not sure why EVERYONE must be vaccinated. Vaccinate whoever is at risk or feels afraid of the virus. No, I’m not against vaccines, but I’m against impractical ideas that don’t make sense. It’s possible this vaccine will need to be re-administered frequently like the flu one. At that point, it’s everyone’s call - just vaccinate yourself and move on

KMPG1, your example of covid vs. polio is wrong. Polio primarily affects children under 5. It was once called infantile paralysis.

Most people who got it had no symptoms, but those who were paralyzed were a dramatic example of the effects. The long-term effects to some people of COVID are not as obvious to the casual observer (lung damage, heart damage, etc.). FDR getting it at age 39 brought a lot of attention, even though it was really rare to get it at that age.

Things will go back exactly the way they were before the virus... so for the people hoping to work from home, get ready to go back to the office.

like

Curious why you feel that way? We’re so far behind other countries in managing the spread and we’re seeing multiple waves happening elsewhere as they attempt to get back to schools and offices. Would love to know more about your thinking

Meh. I’ve remotely onboarded to four WFH jobs in my career. Screen sharing helps with the “how to” aspect. Then it just becomes an exercise in self-discipline, not just to get all the work done but to set appropriate boundaries. I haven’t worked in an office in almost a decade, and I’ve never worried about that messing up my work. And I’m an extrovert who learns by watching! People will be fine. I encourage folks to stop thinking of this as “temporary” - not because I know anything special about any firm’s plans but because it’s gonna help us all WFH better.

Nothing but facts,

Agree with the original post. There are also a lot of agencies who are already bringing people back a couple days a week.

DDB, 2x4, Escape Pod to name a few.

I’m not junior staff so I’ll be home for good. Someone else can figure that out. I put my time in dragging myself to offices for no reason.

I received a job offer for a PM position with a base of $125K and a 10% bonus, fully remote and ok benefits. The parental leave is pretty bad, just FMLA and STD/LTD so the most I’d get is 60% of my salary for 12 weeks. I’ve cancelled most of my interviews except for one where the pay is $135K, 20% bonus, hybrid schedule, good benefits and 16 weeks fully paid parental leave. I’d like to start my family in a year or two - is it better to take the remote gig or the hybrid role with full paid leave?
