You have some great material to work with as you can introduce yourself, tell them it’s great to put a face and name together, you looked forward to meeting them. You can ask how their flight was, do they have any good travel stories to share, what are they interested in hearing/learning about at the conference, how do they like it so far, have they been to this city before, and if all else fails you can talk about the weather!
This sounds weird... but sometimes when I can’t think of what to say I ask myself, what am I genuinely curious to know? If you ask questions to sound normal you probably won’t... but if you ask things you’re *really* curious about the conversation will flow a lot easier.
I find I'm not at all curious about stuff
Similar to what D1 said, I just think of ~5 relevant questions to ask and have them ready to go when things feel awkward! Trust me I understand where you are coming from
Dont over think it
Practice is the key. The more you do better you get slowly
