How can you tell the difference between ADHD and depression?
I know the symptoms can mimic each other, and I know you can have both. I’m diagnosed & being treated for ADHD, but my therapist is convinced it’s not ADHD at all, it’s just depression symptoms mimicking ADHD. Our profession lends itself to depression, of course, and I do think I have some mild depression but it’s not unmanageable like my ADHD is! Any insight?

Funny - I was the other way around. Treatment for depression for years and one day my psychologist was like, sounds like ADHD, and sent me to a psychiatrist for testing. Been on meds for both ever since. Probably hard to untangle since depression can cause loss of concentration and performing poorly can cause depression.

There are a lot of overlapping symptoms. When I first got diagnosed with adhd my doctor put me on antidepressants first to rule out anxiety/depression symptoms. While it helped with some stuff the focus and executive functioning issues did not improve which indicated that adhd was the correct diagnosis. I stayed on both for a bit and then slowly weened off the antidepressants- since no negative side effects I’ve only been on adhd meds since.

Since your situation sounds the opposite you may be able to try the reverse order. If your doctor thinks it’s not adhd what symptoms make you convinced it is?

How are you feeling on the adhd meds only? What’s your focus like? What are your thought patterns like? Are you sad/low mood/low motivation? Are you worrying excessively?

No low mood, no sadness, not a lot of excessive worrying other than some general deadline anxiety. And this is why I think it’s ADHD and not depression. I did well on Vyvanse but had to get off of it bc it wrecked my sleep. But now, the new doc I’m seeing won’t put me back on any stimulant and I’ve been struggling for 6 months now 🥲

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

One of the things that my ADD coach helped me with was realizing that I wasn’t prioritizing activities that help me feel recharged. Between work and home responsibilities, I was just burnt out and overwhelmed.

So now when I start to get burned out I focus on reducing auditory overwhelm, getting outside, listen to music, get comfortable, read a fun book, etc.

As we’re heading into the weekend, what are some things you do to recharge and give yourself a break?
