Because they’re too busy working 😂😂
Jkjk- it’s probably cuz it’s not a “sexy” job like sales/marketing or consulting
I agree with the above. It probably doesn't sound as glamorous as a consultant or lawyer but it's definitely a career path that's has become more popular due to COVID-19.
One of my college professors told me that supply chain didn’t exist as it’s own specialized field until the 80s or 90s. I think a lot of people don’t really understand what we do and how important we are. Maybe they do after shelves have been empty for 2 years though 😂
Many people who enter this industry feel that it is not a sustainable future, I feel that way, I feel that I am learning everything to later move to another type of business, that is to say, I feel it is temporary, and I know that many people feel that way.
Most careers have some kind of appeal whether it's self expression, prestige, related to a hobby. Logistics just...isn't that sexy. It's something most people discover either through work or family businesses. I haven't met one person who thought "I'm gonna work in supply chain management when I grow up!" It is a shame that highschoolers aren't exposed to it more often though. It's a solid choice for a somewhat stable career.
I would say it's all about marketing. You don't see people out there promoting the benefits and perks of getting into supply chain management like you do with lawyers, or coding, or other trendy jobs.
I think the main reason is that many people don't really know how the tasks and departments are divided in the supply sector, I think we make a difference in the national market day by day.
It's a sector that doesn't seem very exciting but once you are in it you understand how important and entertaining it is, I love my job in the logistics sector.
This business can be very exciting but very much UNSUSTAINABLE. There's many avenues in supply chain to learn from and gain view of an industry. Before Covid it was hard to manage after COVID many many companies lost people and never hired causing more workload.
It's an in-between industry made up of loner-type misfits - I say that proudly as one. Many industry colleagues and I found our way to SC simply because we didn't find a fit in other more well known disciplines. We fit the bill because it requires individualistic personalities who can negotiate between parties.
For that reason, it's not a glamorous industry and there aren't that many "wins" in the sense that the work never really ends at a target the way other disciplines often do. There are metrics and KPIs, etc but you don't reach a finale and celebrate the way other project-driven industries do.
I think it’s because tech field is truly emerging and pays much better. People tech easily make between 130k-200k+ and get shares in the company and other perks. SCM has some perks but I still don’t think as many. Can OP elaborate on the opportunities in SCM they’re referring to
