McKinsey & Company Hi all! Any fishes at BCG and/or McK have time to chat sometime within the next few days/weeks?
I’m a consulting analyst at Accenture, really interested in strategy work (mainly tech/software clients but open to all backgrounds) hoping to make the jump some time next year. I’d very much appreciate connecting to understand your journey with the firms and the work you do.
Thanks in advance, and happy holidays!

Work for a year, then ask:
-Do I like this job? (project types, people, clients, hours, etc.)
-Can I keep doing it indefinitely? (SO, family, physical health, mental health, etc.)
-Given my alternatives to exit, do I still prefer this job?
-Do I have what it takes to make it to partner? (i.e. shift from doing to selling)
-Do I have a strong network/platform to execute and make it to partner?
I think that it becomes very clear very quickly if this is your endgame or just a stop on the road.
Well… I was attracted to the sell side of consulting. I took all of the sales trainings I possibly could. I volunteered for every proposal I could, across multiple account teams. I learned soooo much. I started leading proposal teams. I started winning work.
I had my first child and wanted to spend less time on the road or commuting, and so I actually targeted and won some work at a very large customer close to my house. It was a dream scenario. The culture was supposed to be eat what you kill - so I was told.
But I didn’t have the deep technical background I’m cyber security the company wanted to staff the project. Ok, no big deal - 1, promote me for winning work and 2, let me at least part time the project and I can manage a lot of the background activities and learn the work more.
I took a personal inventory of what I liked and filled about consulting and my career, and I like the sales side and hated sitting on client site all the time. One thing I most enjoyed about consulting was client impact. So I started looking around at sales jobs and found a job in IT sales.
I doubled my compensation almost overnight, and it opened up a world of flexibility I couldn’t have imagined.
One thing I didn’t think was going to happen which did is client impact. I have far more impact on my customers than I ever did as a consultant. I will single handedly redesign an organizations entire IT system and affecting their entire go to market strategy. I now work for the #1 AI company in the world.
All that’s to say none of it would NOT have been possible for me to be successful in this role without my consulting experience.
Great personal story on how you arrived at your current destination. Thank you.
If you want work life balance, more time to spend with kids, no health issues, no corporate politics, working late night and still get lay offs due to not being a favorite then consulting is not for you. Consulting is becoming a cognizant and tcs consulting which is ruining the overall culture
No one from WITCH are consultants they are just body shops!
At other firms, the up-or-out system determines that for you ;)
Have an exit in mind. What did you want to achieve (client experience, project leadership, specific skills, close knit network, etc.) - Once you have achieved that, think about your next set of goals and assess if that is more likely in consulting or outside consulting. At least that’s what I did after 10 years in management consulting and left for a senior role at a PE portfolio company and quite happy with the transition

Thanks for sharing! This is my goal too. Mind if I DM to learn more from your experiences?
I got fired 😅
