When I'm looking for junior teams I prefer to see great ideas that didn't run rather than mediocre ideas that did. I can help you sell great ideas. And besides, I've got loads of people who can do mediocre ideas already.
In all seriousness, if you've got nothing out at your current agency, fill your whole book with spec work and side projects. When people ask why you don't have any "real" work in your book, you can tell them why.
Spec work. At your level (and I mean that with no disrespect), good CDs care less about what was actually made and what wasn’t, and more about the quality of thinking behind your ideas.
Did you direct your team? Direct any of the creative? Did any of your ideas shape the project? Think of what defines an Art Director and see if your role on the project aligns. If not, did you work along side a senior that did these things? Glean what you can and make your case.
Just so I'm clear - are you leaving your current agency and applying for a new job?
Show those executions you were a part of. Say you were part of that team. Doesn’t matter that you didn’t create the whole thing. Advertising is a team effort. Just don’t claim you created the whole thing...
I don’t think this is a rare feeling/position at the jr level (heck, even beyond). Sounds like your move is motivated by a lack of opportunity. Telling that story honestly can say a lot about your drive and potential value. But only if it’s clear that you’ve tried everything in your power to get more opportunities at your current gig. Don’t want to come across as over deserving.
You can always do a little spec work too. A personal project is always nice to have as well. Show that you can use some of the stuff you’ve learned on your own things.
