Add enough cushion to their deadline such that if they feel sick today, and do it tomorrow, you still get it in time. Also is it their job to pitch in or it truly is a favor and outside their responsibilities? If it’s their job then you need to communicate feedback to them and later to their manager if you don’t see improvement. You’re being a doormat
Wow that’s a tough one. It’s hard to accuse someone of lying.
Is that person a colleague? Or a direct report?
If a colleague you can voice concern about their health or their family situation ahead of time. Ask make sure that they are Ok. Cc their supervisor.
If they are a direct report then you might be able to ask for more details and follow up to see if they hold to their stories. I mean, they might actually be going through some real stuff... if that’s the case then some empathy will help.
It is a colleague. I am trying to have empathy but the timing is always very odd. They rarely have issues any other time of the week, only right when an assignment is due (that they didn’t complete) and so it’s up to me to pick up their slack and finish it.
