When I was in BigLaw, I was able to somewhat circumvent this issue by shifting my work to other partners, associates, paralegals, and staff who were not as racist or sexist. I developed relationships with specific, trusted people and tried to mainly work with them. I changed my assigned room to work with a different legal assistant, for example.
Also, I tried to be behave in a rational way that was consistent with firm policy and practices, and well-documented via emails. This way, any push back or noncompliance with my instructions would jump out as problematic.
Interestingly, associates who had an issue with a woman of color giving them assignments usually faded away and joined other teams.
This is generally my approach. But I’ve inherited two associates I can’t replace on a matter from a colleague who departed. I don’t plan to work with them again, but the documentation in emails is a good one. I’m having phonecalls where I get wrong answers, but only by the time it goes to the partner do they bother to actually check and make the correction.
