I left BigLaw to go do government HR type work and truthfully, I just had to tell my family that I was miserable and that it wasn’t worth my health. They still make jabs every now and again at how much money I gave up and how much in loans I have that I won’t be able to pay off quickly like I would have been if I stayed in BigLaw. For me it’s been a process of positive self talk reminding me I did the right thing and having a partner who reminds me of that too when others try to bring me down. I also deal with it by just doing all the things I couldn’t do before (like going on bike rides and other small things) and reminding myself that my family and friends are wrong and this type of freedom and balance are worth it. I never would’ve been taking the time to do things like that a year ago and so sometimes just doing those things lifts my spirits

People can talk, but at the end of the day, only you are living YOUR life. No one else was suffering for you while you were in big law. I am glad you did what was best for you. Please ignore those comments!

Tell them to kindly **** themselves. Friends who are disappointed in you for that aren’t your real friends. With family, let them know you made the best decision for yourself and ask that they respect it. And if they don’t, f***’em too. It’s not their life.

like

You’re going to be forgotten in three generations. Who cares about their judgment. You don’t get another shot at life, do what is authentic to you

like

I judge them for being less educated and badass lol

People in general I think are too much oriented around achieving goals which are widely perceived as desirable. A good portion of the fulfilling aspects in life happen in ways which nobody else but who is, and it's really okay. Just because other people don't understand the value of a particular course of action you're taking doesn't mean that it's not valuable to you and therefore worthwhile

like

Family and friends can rain on our parade. It is your life to live not theirs. They are always welcome to go to law school.

Your decision is a brave one! You are choosing to be authentic. So many people do the opposite.. living for others or society’s approval. Congratulations and much success on your new path..

Agree with everyone above telling them to F off with such a ridiculous disappointment. Lawyer is a meaningless title propped up by fake prestige. I am proud of you for leaving! I think one thing that won’t be immediately obvious to friends and family is who you’ll be after leaving a toxic job behind. The happiness you gain back will reflect across every bit of your life. If they’re disappointed after seeing that, they should be left behind

No point being miserable!

How do I figure out spending with my SO? Initially I was paying for 90% of stuff (no actual bills, just going out). I talked to her and said we need to be more even. She was never proactive. She kind of got offended but we ended on a good note to split things. It went well for a couple weeks but now it's back to normal. She never takes out her card and only venmos me if I send her the request. She lets Venmos sit for weeks before paying them. I still let a lot of things slide.

Anyone else struggling with hormones / mood swings? I am almost 16 weeks and been having a real tough time lately, feeling really down and stressed about things. Sadly, causing tension between me and my partner as well as he cannot relate and seems preoccupied with business as usual. Trying to get out the funk and just telling myself it’s all the hormones.

Boyfriend and I have been dating for ~1.5 years and we still only spend weekends together. I want to move in together at the 2 year mark but bf thinks it’s too soon... just feels our relationship is stagnant and not going anywhere. Any thoughts from ppl who’ve gone through similar situations?

My GF and I are dating for 2.5 yrs , She met an office colleague (he has a GF) recently who she initiated a friendship with. I feel that they interact a lot and I'm a little worried of her getting too close to him. A day ago she asked him for lunch and they were out for almost 4-5 hrs. When I expressed how I felt she keeps saying there's nothing going on. I feel that when start to get emotionally close to some other guy than SO then it's not a good sign in relationship. Am I overthinking? contd.

When, or if you set time aside to take care of yourself or do something for yourself, what do you do? I'm realizing I don't really have any "healthy" ways of relaxing outside of work, so drop whatever you got. My SO adds very little to our relationship. She has a dead end job. I cook. I work. I oversee finances. I plan trips. She doesn’t have a voice in the relationship. I’ve asked her to give her perspective but she always defaults to mine bc she thinks I’m smarter/worldly. She feels intimated by me and my social circle. Lately, I’ve found myself thinking for her. Anticipating her wants and needs and then adjusting my behavior to meet them. Which she appreciates but it’s frustrating 29M 27F

Has anyone been through a situation that you were in a terrible relationship ( stress, anger, fights, swears, physical abuse, ego clashes) and how did you resolve it? Some might have worked on and stayed in the relationship and some might have broken up. I am looking for answers from both sides. How did you stay/work on it and how did you break up and move on? Me and my partner have strong feelings for eachother and are almost inseparable despite going through so much.

Hello Guys,

I am in a super good position at Jellyfish as a Director with a good room in terms of growth. Great responsibilities, work life balance and I strongly love my job. However, there is an opportunity to join Google Dublin as an Agency Development Manager (level 4) with strong salary, new challenges, different role and responsibilities etc. I HAVE A STRONG DOUBT about a trade off: is better to have a strong margin of growth and a good position or join Google with the above conditions?

I feel like every company lies about “working your way up.” You’re never allowed to blatantly say that you don’t like your position and you’d like to transition to HR or Finance. It’s almost as if once you get in claims, you’re stuck.

If you’re a manager and you see an employee that wants to branch out into a different department, why would you keep them boxed in for 2+ years?
