How do you protect your evenings and weekends? For me, once I open my laptop after work, it feels like I’ve entered “work mode” and before I know it, it’s time to go to sleep. How do you establish boundaries? Is work-life balance a myth in insurance?

Why would you open your laptop after work unless it was a fire? I’m not checking for email. I’m not looking at data. None of it. Once my laptop closes at five thirtyish on Friday or earlier, I don’t open it back up.
Remember, the company isn’t running work life balance, YOU are!

Thanks. Good advice.

As I’ve gotten older I realized a corporation does not care about me nor do I care about a corporation. I still work hard but I no longer work after hours or on vacation.

like

Easy, don’t open your laptop after work.

Thanks.

Protecting your time outside work starts with clear boundaries and small routines. Setting a strict “stop” time for checking email or Slack, turning off notifications, and creating a separate space for workeven if it’s just a corner, helps signal the shift to personal time. Scheduling activities you enjoy, like exercise, hobbies, or social time, makes it easier to mentally leave work behind, and even in demanding fields like insurance, consistent boundaries make balance achievable.

Love this response. Maybe even add an "accountability partner". If you are married, maybe your spouse or children. If you are on your own, maybe a co-worker/close friend could help.

Once I'm logged off that's that. I turn my phone off laptop locked. I wear headphones when I'm out so customers cannot speak with me. I do not talk shop when I'm off ... staying in always in mode is one of the reasons I do not want to be salary. It's easier to protect my personal life and space when I'm hourly. I can control it.

Great separation. I’ll strive to do this.

I don’t think it’s as easy as some of the above suggest. I really struggle with it. In some industries it is much easier to turn work off at the end of day, but in my role, whatever I don’t get done is still my responsibility to get done as soon as possible. I’ve lost large deals when out on PTO for 1 question that came in while I was out. The best way I’ve found to manage turning off work is to make sure I have a back up who can provide a seamless transition while I’m on vacation, and give them a detailed list of what I’m working/ what may come up and who else to go to if they need additional help. As for end of week days, I make sure the block a 45 minute lunch everyday on my calendar to ensure I get up and take it. I typically stop working around 4:30, but will carry my work phone around until 6-7pm with the volume on in case something comes in, but the key here that I don’t actually do anything during this time unless waiting until morning would truly jeopardize a deal. It gives me peace of mind this way.

My dogs help the stop time at the end of the day too, they start barking to go on a walk around 4:30-5 and won’t give in lol

This is my first job in a large corporate company, and I’m trying to gauge how long it normally takes to move from entry level to another internal position in the insurance industry. I have been applying internally for a year now and I am wondering if this is normal or if my company is just slow?
