Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

This is why they don’t have it. So we remain corporate serfs. We literally have to work to stay healthy (and in some cases, alive).
This. I came here to say this.
As a freelancer I pay $6000 a year for gold level insurance, but it’s tax deductible and the difference between what I make as a freelancer and what I’d make as a salaried employee is way more than $6000. I personally wouldn’t let insurance trap you in a terrible job, but I also don’t have a family to insure so YMMV.

Yup.

I'm a 40 hr/week freelancer, fulltime employee without the benefits. I can only keep this up until l I turn 30 when I age out of eligibility for cheap "catastrophic" health insurance. I'd absolutely keep freelancing forever if I didn't have the looming threat of $500/month insurance.
You need to raise your rates, as a ft freelance designer you should absolutely be able to afford 500/mo, im 31 and a freelancer and have shitty insurance but not too bad for $260/mo in los angeles
🙋🏻♀️. As it is, I just freelance and pay out the nose for it but ahh to not have an 8k deductible.
I live in a country with national healthcare and it’s a great service for a good number of the population who otherwise would have no other option but the system is terribly burdened, under funded and you could be waiting months or years for fairly routine appointments and procedures. The secret no one talks about in the US is that most people who make decent living in the UK or Europe usually pay for private insurance for some or all of their medical needs anyway. And now I feel like the Debbie Downer of this thread.
Universal healthcare with the choice to go private is definitely better than the system the US currently has. No doubt. If you break your arm and go to the emergency room, you walk without having to pay anything which is great. The system doesn’t work as well if you have a chronic condition, are old or have underlining health conditions and need regular appoints, procedures or check-ups. It’s better for the country but it’s not 100% free. We pay for it through our taxes.
To be honest, idk if I have enough faith in our government to make that switch.
Lmao at this notion of creatives thinking universal healthcare is "free"
You’d still pay for it through taxes of course. And we’d have crushing unemployment from all the people in ancillary industries who no longer have a job. I’m looking at you pharma advertising to consumers. And insurance companies. And all those people who fill out paperwork in doctors offices.

Wouldn’t this also mean lower salaries?
I am based in the EU and my counterparts in the US earn at least £15,000 more than me.
I’d take a decent pay cut in exchange for a guarantee to not go into crushing debt after an accident or health emergency.

IMMEDIATELY
I would have started my own business long ago if it weren’t for the insanely high cost of getting health insurance on your own.
absolutely
Assuming they still need to eat so they would still need a job. But certainly we’d feel less tied to a specific employer. But that’s not going to happen anytime soon because we can’t fund it.
